News for all Monsterverse fans: A third season of "Monarch: Legacy of Monsters" is apparently in the works! At least, behind-the-scenes talks are taking place between Apple TV and the production studio Legendary Television, as several media outlets are reporting. But here's the thing: If the third season gets the green light, some major changes are likely on the horizon!

New Titans & a New Creative Team

The search for a new writing team is reportedly already underway. According to the industry magazine Variety, they've already contacted several candidates for the showrunner position. "Monarch" was created by Chris Black and Matt Faction; most recently, Black served as the series' showrunner. These behind-the-scenes changes raise questions about the show's creative direction. Will the cast from the first seasons return? Or will new characters take center stage? The question of the cast remains unanswered for now. However, Variety, among others, reports that several new Titans are set to appear in the third season.

MonsterVerse Prequel to Monarch

In addition, a spin-off series based on "Monarch" is reportedly still in development. The changes to the main series will therefore have no impact on it. The series is conceived as a prequel and features a younger version of Lee Shaw. Shaw is portrayed by Kurt Russell in "Monarch," while in the prequel, the character is set to be played by his son, Wyatt Russell. Wyatt Russell has already portrayed the younger version of Colonel Shaw in the main series. You can find more details about the prequel series' plot in this article.

Godzilla x Kong: Supernova

But before a potential third season of "Monarch" or the prequel series is released, MonsterVerse fans can look forward to another highlight: "Godzilla x Kong: Supernova." The movie will hit the big screen on March 26, 2027. You can find all the known details in our comprehensive movie preview!

The MonsterVerse

The so-called "MonsterVerse" is a shared cinematic universe created by the film studio Legendary Entertainment, in which some of the most famous monsters in film history clash. It all began in 2014 with "Godzilla," in which the giant lizard returned to the big screen in a Hollywood film for the first time in years.

Three years later, "Kong: Skull Island" followed—an adventure film about the gigantic ape King Kong, who encounters other dangerous creatures on a mysterious island. With "Godzilla II: King of the Monsters" (2019), the universe was finally expanded to include other legendary titans such as Mothra, Rodan, and King Ghidorah. In 2021, "Godzilla vs. Kong" featured the epic showdown between the two famous monsters, before they had to join forces against a new threat in 2024's "Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire."

What is Monarch about?

In addition to the feature films, the MonsterVerse has also been expanded by the animated series "Skull Island" and the live-action series "Monarch: Legacy of Monsters". The latter focuses in particular on the mysterious organization Monarch, which investigates the appearance and existence of the gigantic Titans. The Apple TV series "tracks two siblings looking to uncover their family's connection to the secretive organization known as Monarch. Clues lead them into the world of monsters and ultimately down the rabbit hole to Army officer Lee Shaw, taking place in the 1950s and half a century later, where Monarch is threatened by what Shaw knows."

In the first seasons, the lead roles were played by Anna Sawai, Kiersey Clemons, Ren Watabe, Mari Yamamoto, and Kurt and Wyatt Russell, among others. We'll have to wait and see if Apple TV officially confirms the third season soon—and how the behind-the-scenes changes will affect the show's creative direction.
