First image of Omar Sy in Mercenary: An Extraction Series
The action franchise enters the next round!
After the two "Extraction" films with Chris Hemsworth enjoyed great popularity, Netflix is now following up with a series. A first image of lead actor Omar Sy in "Mercenary: An Extraction Series" has now been released.
Omar Sy, mainly known from "The Intouchables", takes on the leading role of an experienced mercenary who is sent to Libya for an extremely risky rescue operation. On the ground, he not only gets into life-threatening battles with unscrupulous opponents, but also becomes entangled in a complex web of political tensions and power interests.
Glen Mazzara, who previously worked as showrunner on "The Walking Dead", is the creative head of the series. Omar Sy will be joined by "Game of Thrones" star Natalie Dormer and Boyd Holbrook.
The previous "Extraction" films primarily impressed with their uncompromising action, elaborately staged fight sequences and fast pace. So far, the focus has been on mercenary Tyler Rake, played by Chris Hemsworth, who has had to rescue hostages on dangerous missions around the globe. Whether the series can keep up with this remains to be seen. A start date has yet to be set.
Adrenaline, hail of bullets and uncompromising action: movie tips in the style of "Extraction"
With "Extraction" and "Extraction 2", Netflix has redefined modern action cinema. Fast-paced staging, long one-take sequences, tough hand-to-hand combat and an emotionally drawn mercenary at the heart of the story made the films audience favorites. Anyone looking for similar films that are just as uncompromisingly, intensely and physically staged will quickly discover that the genre offers some real highlights: The genre offers some real highlights. We present some movie tips that fans of "Extraction" should definitely see.
The Raid (2011): Action in its purest form
Few films are as synonymous with uncompromising action as "The Raid". The Indonesian cult film follows an elite unit that storms a high-rise building full of heavily armed criminals. The story is minimalist, but that is precisely the movie's strength. The fight choreography is brutal, precise and realistic – every blow hurts. Anyone who appreciates the handmade fights and high intensity of "Extraction" will not be able to ignore "The Raid".
John Wick (2014): Stylish violence with a clear signature
Even though "John Wick" is a little more stylized than "Extraction", both films share a similar DNA. A lone fighter against seemingly endless opponents, perfectly choreographed action and a main character who is more convincing through his actions than his words. Keanu Reeves' portrayal of the hitman is as physical as it is focused. Fans of tactical gunfights and uncompromising pacing in particular will get their money's worth here.
Man on Fire (2004)
Although "Man on Fire" with Denzel Washington is more emotional and less focused on sustained action, it is thematically very close to "Extraction". A serene ex-mercenary takes on the protection of a kidnapped child and then unleashes a merciless campaign of revenge. The film impresses with its dark atmosphere, intense violence and an internally broken protagonist – aspects that also characterize Tyler Rake.
13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi (2016)
Anyone who appreciates the military aspect of "Extraction" should take a look at this film. Based on true events, "13 Hours" depicts the desperate struggle of a small group of security forces during an attack on a US consulate in Libya. The film relies on realistic firefights, clear military action and a high level of tension. The claustrophobic threat situation is strongly reminiscent of the dangerous missions from "Extraction".
Sicario (2015): Gritty, brutal and realistic
Although "Sicario" is less classic action cinema, the uncompromising depiction of violence and morality makes it interesting for "Extraction" fans. The film shows the merciless fight against drug cartels on the Mexican border and focuses on realistic suspense instead of explosions on the assembly line. The precise staging and serious tone are particularly reminiscent of the tougher moments in Netflix films.
Hardcore Henry (2015): Action without a break
A somewhat experimental but extremely intense film: "Hardcore Henry" is told entirely from a first-person perspective and has practically no pause for breath. The plot is secondary, the focus is clearly on adrenaline and movement. Anyone who loves the long action sequences from "Extraction" and is prepared to embrace an unusual concept will get one of the most radical action films of recent years.
Nobody (2021): The underestimated avenger
Bob Odenkirk surprises as a seemingly inconspicuous family man with a deadly past. "Nobody" combines dry humor with surprisingly tough action. Similar to "Extraction", the film shows how a single man takes on a superior force and pushes himself to his physical and emotional limits. The hand-to-hand fights in particular are intense and credibly staged.
Conclusion
"Extraction" stands for modern, uncompromising action cinema that relies on real stunts, tough choreography and a strong main character. Films such as "The Raid", "John Wick" or "Man Under Fire" show that this genre offers many facets – from pure violence to emotional depth and realistic military scenarios. If you are looking for films that get the pulse racing and deliver action without detours, you are guaranteed to find your next adrenaline rush in these tips.
