The hit video game "Cyberpunk 2077" is being made into a movie! As reported by Deadline magazine, Paramount Pictures is planning a live-action adaptation of the action role-playing game of the same name by CD Projekt Red.

Paramount has secured an experienced Hollywood producer for the project. Lorenzo di Bonaventura, who has previously worked on the "Transformers" franchise, among other projects, will oversee the project alongside CD Projekt Red. It is not yet clear when the film will hit the big screen or who will direct it. The role-playing game has sold more than 40 million copies worldwide to date. The expansion "Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty" was also a huge success, with 15 million copies sold.

What Cyberpunk 2077 Is About

"Cyberpunk 2077" is set in Night City, a fictional metropolis in the U.S. state of California. The city is marked by violence, social inequality, and the influence of powerful corporations. Technology is ubiquitous and allows people to augment their bodies with numerous cybernetic implants. The story centers on the mercenary V, whose life changes dramatically after a failed mission. V comes into possession of a special biochip that contains the digital consciousness of Johnny Silverhand.

The legendary rock musician and former terrorist is portrayed by Keanu Reeves. The problem: Silverhand's consciousness gradually begins to supplant V's personality. It is not yet known whether Keanu Reeves will also take on a role in the planned live-action film. Nor is it certain whether the story of V and Johnny Silverhand will actually serve as the basis for the film.

Paramount Is Increasing Its Focus on Video Game Adaptations

The "Cyberpunk 2077" project isn't the only video game adaptation Paramount is currently working on. The company apparently sees great potential in well-known gaming brands and wants to bring them to the big screen. Upcoming projects include a new film adaptation of "Street Fighter", which hits theaters on October 16. An adaptation of the successful "Call of Duty" series is also in development. The action film will be directed by Peter Berg, who is also co-writing the screenplay with Taylor Sheridan.
