The upcoming video game adaption of "Street Fighter" is slowly taking shape: After a number of actors have already been announced in recent weeks and months, a central role has now been cast.

Callina Liang as Chun-Li

The industry portal Deadline reports on the casting of Callina Liang as Chun-Li. Chun-Li is one of the most iconic characters in the "Street Fighter" world. She was introduced in the 1991 game "Street Fighter II" and has been a central character in the series ever since. Chun-Li is considered one of the first playable female fighters in a major fighting game. In the games, the Interpol agent is famous for her martial arts skills and tries to avenge the death of her father.

The actress Callina Liang has not been in the acting business for long. Most recently she took on the leading role in the thriller drama "Bad Genius" alongside Marvel star Benedict Wong. Liang is now following in the footsteps of Ming-Na Wen and Kristin Kreuk, who played the character in the previous film adaptations.

In the "Street Fighter" remake, Liang joins a cast including Andrew Koji, Noah Centineo and Hollywood star Jason Momoa. Meanwhile, Kitao Sakurai, who directed the comedy "Bad Trip", will be directing the film. According to a rumor, "Fallout" actor Walton Goggins is also in talks for a role in the video game adaptation. You can find all the details here.

50 Cent in Street Fighter?

According to a report by the portal Nexus Point News, Curtis Jackson, better known as 50 Cent, will also be part of the cast. The rapper is being considered for the character Balrog. Balrog is a disgraced boxer who also made his first appearance in "Street Fighter II".

The "Street Fighter" film is based on the Capcom video game series of the same name, which made its debut in 1987. The series is one of the biggest and most iconic franchises in video game history. More detailed information on the film's plot has not been released. It is not yet known when "Street Fighter" will be released in cinemas.

Fighting game adaptations

Fighting games have been one of the most popular genres in the video game world for decades. Titles such as "Street Fighter", "Mortal Kombat" and "Tekken" have influenced generations of gamers and achieved cult status. So it's no wonder that Hollywood has long been trying to transfer the action-packed potential of these games to the big screen. However, the path from console to cinema has not always been a success.

The early attempts in the 90s: "Street Fighter" and "Mortal Kombat"

One of the first major attempts to turn a fighting game into a live-action film was "Street Fighter" with Jean-Claude Van Damme, Raul Julia and Ming-Na Wen. Despite a star-studded cast and a big budget, the film failed to really convince either critics or fans. A short time later, "Mortal Kombat" and its sequel "Mortal Kombat: Annihilation" were released.

Modern reinterpretations and upcoming films

After a long break, the genre celebrated a comeback with "Mortal Kombat". The film focused on brutal fights, familiar characters and modern effects. Fans can rejoice: a sequel is planned for October 2025. After the bloody first movie, "Mortal Kombat 2" now takes us straight to Hollywood – with the legendary Johnny Cage, played by "The Boys" star Karl Urban. While the first part established the basic conflict between Earthrealm and Outworld, the sequel finally brings the iconic tournament to the big screen.

In addition to familiar faces from the first film, viewers can also look forward to new characters. Among others, Adeline Rudolph joins the cast as Kitana and Tati Gabrielle as Jade. The film is scheduled to be released on October 24, 2025.

The new "Street Fighter" film will also mark the big comeback of another game. In general, video game film adaptations have become an integral part of Hollywood.
