Donald Glover Wants More Fun in the Star Wars Universe

Glover will once again slip into the role of Lando Calrissian

By Jonas Reichel on

Donald Glover will be playing the charismatic Lando Calrissian once again - in a standalone "Lando" film. Above all, he would like to bring the fun back into the "Star Wars" universe.

In an interview with the Wall Street Journal, the musician, actor and producer said that more joy was needed in the galaxy far, far away. The franchise was sometimes "way too serious". In a world full of unrest and war, Glover longs for the human side of the characters to be brought more into focus, especially when it comes to the element of fun.

Glover, who won the hearts of fans with his role as Lando Calrissian in "Solo: A Star Wars Story", will co-write the upcoming "Lando" movie with his brother Stephen Glover. Both are replacing the original showrunner Justin Simien, who intended to realize the project as a series for Disney+.

The "Lando" project will be part of a whole series of "Star Wars" movies that Disney currently has up its sleeve. In addition to "Star Wars 10: New Jedi Order" with Daisy Ridley, a film by Taika Waititi, a prequel about the first Jedi by James Mangold and a trilogy by Rian Johnson are also in the pipeline.

A Brief Overview of All Star Wars Movies

The Original Trilogy (1977-1983)

Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope (1977)

Originally known only as "Star Wars", this movie laid the foundation for the franchise. Directed by George Lucas, "A New Hope" tells the story of Luke Skywalker, who joins the Rebel Alliance to fight the evil Empire and destroy the Death Star. The movie was a groundbreaking success and revolutionized blockbuster cinema. Characters such as Luke, Princess Leia, Han Solo and Darth Vader became pop culture icons.

Star Wars: Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back (1980)

As a direct sequel, "The Empire Strikes Back" is considered one of the best movies in the series. Directed by Irvin Kershner, the film shows the Empire at its strongest, as Luke Skywalker embarks on his Jedi training with Master Yoda. With one of the greatest plot twists in movie history - Darth Vader revealing that he is Luke's father - this movie remains a highlight of the saga.

Star Wars: Episode VI - Return of the Jedi (1983)

"Return of the Jedi" concludes the original trilogy. Luke Skywalker confronts his father, Darth Vader, and the Emperor, while the rebels launch another attack on the Death Star. The movie brings the story of the Skywalker family to a provisional conclusion and shows the liberation of the galaxy from the Empire.

The Prequel Trilogy (1999–2005)

Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace (1999)

"The Phantom Menace" marked the beginning of the prequel trilogy and tells the back story of the original movies. The movie features the young Anakin Skywalker, who would later become Darth Vader, and the political scheming that led to the rise of the Empire. Although the movie received mixed reviews, it introduced new characters such as Qui-Gon Jinn, Padmé Amidala and the controversial Jar Jar Binks.

Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones (2002)

"Attack of the Clones" picks up ten years after "The Phantom Menace". The galaxy is on the brink of a major war and Anakin Skywalker's relationship with Padmé Amidala is intensifying. The film shows the origins of the Clone Wars, which are later explored further in the animated series.

Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith (2005)

In "Revenge of the Sith", Anakin's tragic transformation into Darth Vader is accomplished. The movie shows how the Republic falls and the Empire is born. With the climax in a duel between Anakin and Obi-Wan Kenobi, this movie offers the emotionally most powerful moments of the prequels.

The Sequel Trilogy (2015-2019)

Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens (2015)

"The Force Awakens" was the first "Star Wars" movie directed by J.J. Abrams and continued the story 30 years after "Return of the Jedi". New characters such as Rey, Finn and Kylo Ren appear in the movie, and old heroes such as Han Solo and Leia Organa return. The film was a huge commercial success, despite revisiting many elements of the original trilogy.
