"Extraction" spin-off series with Omar Sy
The Russos will be active as producers
Action fans have gotten their money's worth in recent years with the two "Extraction" films. Now Netflix is expanding the universe with a spin-off series. In the leading role: Omar Sy.
According to Deadline, the streaming giant has secured Glen Mazzara, known for "The Walking Dead", as showrunner for the eight-part series. Behind the scenes is the production company AGBO, which is headed by Joe and Anthony Russo.
At the center of the new series is a mercenary played by Omar Sy, who is sent on a life-threatening mission to rescue hostages in Libya. He is drawn into a maelstrom of conflict between hostile factions and deadly opponents. In addition to high-tension action, the series will also focus on the emotional components of the characters, who are confronted with personal trauma, betrayal and difficult decisions.
Netflix executive Peter Friedlander expressed his enthusiasm for the project:
"Audiences are in for a thrill as we delve deeper into the Extraction universe. With Omar Sy leading the charge, our collaboration with the Russos, alongside Glen Mazzara, fans can expect even more of the high-octane adventures they love from the Extraction franchise."
The "Extraction" franchise began in 2020 with the first film directed by Sam Hargrave and based on the graphic novel "Ciudad" by Ande Parks. It starred Chris Hemsworth as Australian black ops mercenary Tyler Rake, who was sent to rescue the son of an Indian drug lord from Dhaka, Bangladesh. But the mission quickly turned into a fight for survival.
The success of the first film was followed by the sequel "Extraction 2" in 2023, in which Rake had to rescue an abused family from the captivity of a Georgian gangster. This film was also produced by Netflix and was a great success. There is no start date for the series yet.
