Digger: First trailer for the new Tom Cruise movie is coming soon – you've never seen the star like this before
The film will be released in theaters this year – the release date has already been set
There is great anticipation for the new film starring Tom Cruise: "Digger." This is partly due to acclaimed filmmaker Alejandro G. Iñárritu, who co-wrote the screenplay and is directing the film. Above all, however, many movie fans are eager to see how Tom Cruise will portray his role in the film. Because one thing is already certain: we've never seen the "Mission: Impossible" star like this on the big screen before.
The anticipation for the film's first trailer is correspondingly high. A teaser for "Digger" was released earlier, giving us a first glimpse of the plot and Tom Cruise's look. However, the teaser didn't reveal much. As DiscussingFilm reports, the trailer is now ready for release. So it shouldn't be long before we get to see it. It's probably just a matter of a few days. As soon as the trailer for "Digger" is released, we'll show it to you right here!
What Digger with Tom Cruise is about
Not too many details about the plot have been revealed yet either. So far, we know that Tom Cruise takes on the role of the protagonist, Digger Rockwell. The character is said to be the most powerful CEO on the planet. Apparently, it's up to Rockwell to save the world—though he has to save it from a catastrophe he himself caused. To get a sense of the tone the film might take, take a look at the official tagline for "Digger." It reads: "A comedy of catastrophic proportions."
Equally bizarre are the short scenes featured in the teaser. Set to the song "O Green World" by the Gorillaz, Tom Cruise performs a strange-looking dance routine with a shovel. You don't really learn anything, but you find yourself thinking: I'd love to find out more about this oddball. When a first, unreleased trailer recently offered further glimpses of Tom Cruise's character at CinemaCon, Variety described him as an "insane, cat-loving billionaire with a big belly, a comb over and a thick southern accent."

When Iñárritu's new film Digger hits theaters
In a few months at the latest, we'll finally know what Digger Rockwell is all about: "Digger" hits theaters on October 2, 2026. Alongside "Top Gun" star Tom Cruise, the cast includes a number of other well-known actors. Among them are Jesse Plemons, Riz Ahmed, Sophie Wilde, Emma D'Arcy, John Goodman, Michael Stuhlbarg, Robert John Burke, Burn Gorman, and Sandra Hüller. The latter is clearly establishing herself more and more in Hollywood. While she is currently enjoying success in the sci-fi blockbuster "Project Hail Mary" alongside Hollywood star Ryan Gosling, Hüller has landed her next prestigious project with "Digger," which will be seen by a global audience.
For the film, Alejandro G. Iñárritu is not only serving as director and co-writer, but also as a producer alongside Tom Cruise and Mary Parent. The production budget allocated for "Digger" is reported to be $125 million. That's a hefty sum, especially considering the film isn't part of a franchise. The fact that they're willing to take that risk, however, gives a hint of just how much they're banking on the collaboration between Iñárritu and Cruise.
Digger could earn Tom Cruise his first Oscar for Best Actor
For Cruise, the film could be a career highlight. There is already speculation as to whether the role of Digger Rockwell could finally earn him that long-awaited Oscar. He recently received an Honorary Oscar—but Cruise has so far waited in vain for the Best Actor Oscar. His performance in "Digger" could potentially change that. Of course, at this point, we can only speculate on how his performance will be received and whether an Oscar is even in the cards. But he is already being touted as a potential candidate for the 2027 Oscar for Best Actor. Especially since Alejandro G. Iñárritu already helped another major Hollywood star win his first Oscar for Best Actor in 2016 after years of waiting: Leonardo DiCaprio, who played the lead role in Iñárritu's survival drama "The Revenant."
