Red swimsuits, wide beaches, and dramatic rescue missions: the iconic '90s series "Baywatch" is being rebooted! A movie starring Dwayne Johnson already hit theaters in 2017 – and now the franchise is making its return as a series.

The new "Baywatch" reboot has been in development for some time. Now, the network FOX has ordered a first season of twelve episodes for the reboot. According to the initial official statements, an entirely new cast will be responsible for protecting the coast this time around. The new series is intended to be a contemporary update of the original. It has been announced that the series is set for a "modern-day comeback" with "contemporary trappings, tensions and challenges." But of course, adrenaline-fueled rescue missions and the characters' relationships and emotions will also remain at the heart of the reboot.

"Baywatch" was one of the most popular TV shows of the '90s. The US series follows a team of lifeguards during their missions on the beaches of California – complete with plenty of drama and numerous slow-motion shots. David Hasselhoff and Pamela Anderson, in particular, shaped the show's image, which reached millions of viewers worldwide.

It is not yet known who will be slipping into the iconic red swimsuits this time. Fans of the original might at least hope for guest appearances from some familiar faces. The series is scheduled to premiere in the 2026/2027 TV season, though an exact release date has yet to be announced.

The Phenomenon of Baywatch

Rescue missions on the beach and dramatic love stories: Hardly any other series shaped the TV landscape of the 90s as much as "Baywatch". What once began as a simple lifeguard series became a worldwide phenomenon – and still enjoys cult status today.

A hit series with unexpected success

"Baywatch" started in 1989 on the US channel NBC – and initially flopped. But a short time later, the success story took off. Millions of viewers around the world tuned in to follow David Hasselhoff as Mitch Buchannon and his colleagues on their spectacular rescue missions. With a mixture of beach drama, family problems, action sequences and, of course, attractive actors, "Baywatch" struck a chord with international audiences. The series also enjoyed great success globally and became one of the USA's biggest TV exports.

But even then, "Baywatch" was not free of criticism. The series often worked with clichés, exaggerated slow motion and was also criticized for its superficial portrayals. The series also became synonymous with an idealized California: sun, sea, adventure and eternal youth.

Pamela Anderson, David Hasselhoff & Co.

Alongside David Hasselhoff, who became the show's figurehead as Mitch Buchannon, Pamela Anderson in the role of C.J. Parker was particularly influential in its international success. Both have since become icons and were among the most popular actors in the TV landscape during the "Baywatch" era. But many other actors also became stars thanks to "Baywatch". At the same time, the red swimsuits became one of the most famous costumes in TV history.

The 2017 movie

In 2017, Hollywood tried to bring the "Baywatch" franchise to the big screen with a good dose of self-irony. The action comedy of the same name starred Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, Zac Efron, Alexandra Daddario, Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Kelly Rohrbach, among others. David Hasselhoff and Pamela Anderson also paid a visit to the reboot.

Overall, the film focused less on drama and more on humor, deliberately playing with the clichés of the original series and attempting to give the cult material a modern treatment. Despite high expectations and a prominent cast, the response was mixed. In general, the film was received rather less positively.

A pop cultural legacy

Although the last episode of the original series was broadcast in 2001, "Baywatch" remains anchored in our cultural memory to this day. From parodies and fashion inspirations to countless pop culture references: The series has become a symbol for a certain attitude towards life in the 90s. It will be interesting to see what the upcoming series reboot will look like and whether it can build on its earlier successes. One thing is certain, however: "Baywatch" lives on – in memory, slow motion and in pop cultural memory.
