The Avengers are reuniting! Filming of the long-awaited Marvel sequel "Avengers: Doomsday" has officially begun. Directors Anthony and Joe Russo revealed this on social media – including a first set photo. It shows the chair of Robert Downey Jr, who is known to be returning for "Avengers 5". However, as it was announced at San Diego Comic Con 2024, he will not be playing Iron Man, but the villain Victor von Doom.

The film is being shot at Pinewood Studios in London and this is set to continue into the summer. However, things will resume shortly afterwards, with "Avengers 6: Secret Wars" scheduled to be shot right after the fifth movie in the series.

Cast of Avengers 5

We also know part of the cast of "Doomsday" already – and it is certainly impressive. Marvel announced almost 30 cast members in a major livestream event a few weeks ago. Several actors are returning in their roles, above all numerous "X-Men" actors. Here's another overview of the names confirmed so far:

According to reports, it won't stop there. Among those not yet confirmed are Tom Holland as Spider-Man, Benedict Cumberbatch as Doctor Strange and Elizabeth Olsen as Wanda. Some other well-known actors are likely to join the cast, too. For example, there have long been rumors about an appearance by Hulk, She-Hulk and Hulk's son Skaar. Presumed concept images have already been leaked.

Chris Claremont, author of the "X-Men" comics, recently announced that the character of Scarlet Witch, played by Elizabeth Olsen, will apparently be returning. But in a "good" version. He also hinted that although Vision belongs to her, his return is still open.

The Russo brothers will once again be responsible for directing the two upcoming "Avengers" movies. The two have already directed "Captain America: The Winter Soldier", "Captain America: Civil War" and, of course, "Avengers: Infinity War" and "Avengers: Endgame" in the MCU.

Release Date

The theatrical release of "Avengers: Doomsday" is already known: it is scheduled for May 1, 2026. This means that the start of filming on April 28, 2025 is almost exactly one year before the official theatrical release – which is actually quite late for such a big movie with an elaborate post-production. We are excited to find out what awaits us after the long "Avengers" break.

If you still have some catching up to do or would like to start a rewatch before "Avengers 5", you can do so on Disney Plus. You can stream all the MCU movies there. For now, however, Marvel is about to show "Thunderbolts*" with Florence Pugh, David Harbour and Sebastian Stan in theaters.

This Is What "Thunderbolts*" Is About

In "Thunderbolts*", Marvel brings its own anti-hero team to the big screen, which is clearly based on the idea of the Suicide Squad. At the center is a group of mercenaries and anti-heroes who are already familiar from various Marvel movies. The main characters include super soldier John Walker, special agent Yelena Belova and Bucky Barnes. Familiar characters such as Taskmaster and the Red Guardian are likewise part of the team.

The Thunderbolts are sent on a dangerous mission during which they encounter Sentry – an extremely powerful character who makes his debut in the MCU in this movie. The first trailers already indicate that the unconventional team will provide entertainment with a mixture of both action and humor. "Thunderbolts*" opens in cinemas on May 2, 2025.
