Lady Gaga in Wednesday 2
Jenna Ortega had long hoped for the pop star's involvement
With the second season of "Wednesday", Netflix is almost sure to have another huge hit in the works. Yet the makers don't appear to be resting on their laurels, as another big star is said to be joining the cast of the sequel.
The magazine Entertainment Weekly claims to have learned from sources that no less than Lady Gaga will be seen in an as yet unknown role. She is reportedly currently filming for the role in Europe. Previously, a fan video went viral in which her hit "Bloody Mary" was mixed with dance footage of Jenna Ortega's Wednesday. Ortega, who is also the producer of the second season, revealed at the 2023 Golden Globes that she would love to have Lady Gaga in the sequel.
There are no further details about the plot of season 2 at the moment. Nevertheless, initial rumors have already been circulating that Morticia Addams, who acts as the matriarch of the Addams family, is set to play a much bigger role in the second season. The series will once again be produced by Tim Burton, who will also be directing the series.
The Wednesday Phenomenon
Since its release in 2022, the series "Wednesday" has aroused a great deal of interest and delighted fans and critics all over the world. The Netflix production tells the story of the Addams Family's famous daughter, Wednesday Addams, and offers a mix of dark humor, supernatural drama and a dash of coming-of-age story. Directed by Tim Burton, known for his iconic and often macabre film projects, Wednesday brings a breath of fresh air to the classic Addams Family narrative and adds a new, deeper dimension to the character.
Plot and Setting
At the center of the series is Wednesday Addams, played by Jenna Ortega, who is portrayed as a loner with a penchant for the morbid. Wednesday is sent to a boarding school called Nevermore Academy – a school designed for "outcasts" such as werewolves, vampires and sirens. Nevermore has a long history and is where her parents, Morticia and Gomez Addams, went to school. There, however, she quickly discovers that she has more than just the challenges of teenage life to overcome: she becomes embroiled in a series of mysterious events and gruesome murders that must be solved.
Wednesday, who has psychic abilities herself, uses her talents and sharp mind to unravel the school's mysteries, but she remains skeptical and suspicious of the adults around her, which leads to many tensions. Through her investigations, she learns more about her family's secrets, the dark past of Nevermore and discovers a lot about herself in the process.
Tim Burton's Signature Style and Visual Design
Tim Burton, known for movies such as "Edward Scissorhands" and "Beetlejuice", brings his unmistakable style to the series. "Wednesday" is "Burtonesque" through and through: the series is dark, whimsical and visually striking at the same time. Burton's love for the surreal and the uncanny is reflected in every aspect of the series – from the school's gothic architecture to the dramatic color contrasts to the costume design.
The series perfectly captures Wednesday's melancholic yet rebellious nature, portraying her as a complex, multi-layered character struggling with the expectations and rules of her environment. Jenna Ortega's portrayal of Wednesday has been praised by many as she plays the character as intelligent, headstrong and vulnerable at the same time. Her portrayal brings the perfect blend of aloofness and inner strength while staying true to the original character.
The Success and Significance of the Series
"Wednesday" has quickly become a pop culture phenomenon and has been the subject of intense discussion on social media. Ortega's performance and the chemistry between the characters in particular have delighted fans around the world. The series goes far beyond a simple reimagining and manages to modernize the classic Addams Family franchise and bring it into the modern day. In doing so, it addresses themes that are relevant to many young viewers, such as being an outsider, identity and the search for belonging.
