A Minecraft Movie 2 (2027) Movie Preview
A new adventure in the Overworld awaits!

One of the biggest box office hits of 2025 is getting a second installment: the sequel to "A Minecraft Movie" has been officially confirmed! The world of Minecraft continues to expand – and there is already a first hint of what to expect in the new movie! In this article, we summarize all the information we have so far – including when the film will be released in theaters!
What Is Minecraft 2 About?
The first film adaptation was stuck in development for years and was a real experiment: turning a game without any real storyline into a movie – could that work? But the box office results exceeded even the wildest expectations: in 2025, only "Lilo & Stitch" and the Chinese blockbuster "Ne Zha 2" were more successful worldwide. So it was only a matter of time before "Minecraft" got a sequel.
But what do we already know about the second installment? First, there are, of course, the clues from the first movie in the form of two post-credits scenes. When Steve returns to his old house at the end, he encounters a woman named Alex. Of course, many "Minecraft" fans already know that Alex – just like Steve – is one of the playable characters in the game. Director Jared Hess has revealed that Alex will play a central role in the sequel.
"The character we teased is Alex, the other massively critical character in 'Minecraft'. It's Steve (Black) and Alex, and so that's the one that we will be bringing to the table without a doubt."
In another post-credits scene, we learn that Marlene, played by Jennifer Coolidge, and Nitwit want to get married. So we can easily imagine a humorous subplot for the sequel revolving around the couple's wedding.
Although nothing else has been revealed about the story of the "Minecraft" sequel, the announcement of Part 2 contains a certain hint that has fans already busy speculating.
The First Minecraft 2 Poster
In October 2025, film distributor Warner Bros. released the first official poster for "Minecraft 2". It shows two pickaxes, but one small detail is particularly interesting: a slight purple shimmer. This, of course, immediately reminds us of the end of the game. It is one of the three dimensions in "Minecraft" – and the home of the legendary Ender Dragon!
Could this be the main villain in Part 2? It's quite likely: director Jared Hess has already emphasized that there are many elements from the game that unfortunately didn't fit into the first film. The Ender Dragon in "Minecraft 2" should therefore be a must!
The poster also provides one key piece of information: the release date of "A Minecraft Movie 2"! We now know that the sequel will be released in theaters on July 23, 2027. However, the film's actual title is not yet known. So we might be in for a surprise that could reveal more about the plot!
Cast & Crew
Behind the scenes, nothing has changed: Jared Hess is directing, as he did for the first film, and Chris Galletta is back to write the screenplay – together with Hess.
There has been no official confirmation of the cast yet. Still, we would be very surprised if we didn't get to see many familiar faces again – especially popular stars like Jack Black, Jason Momoa, and Emma Myers. At least Jack Black's casting seems to be a sure thing, since Steve's return has already been more or less confirmed.
What's interesting is the casting of Alex. In "A Minecraft Movie", the character was portrayed by Alice May Connolly. However, her face was not shown. On the film database IMDb, Connolly is also listed only as "Alex Double." We therefore believe that the role will eventually be cast with a bigger name.
Minecraft 2 vs. The Simpsons 2: The Big Cinematic Event?
We are excited to see how the sequel will perform at the box office. Curiosity about the first part was, of course, enormous – but can a sequel generate the same level of hype? The release date is also interesting: a new "The Simpsons" movie is scheduled to hit theaters on the same day. Online, the first nicknames for the potential showdown are already circulating: could 2027 be the year of the big "Simpscraft" event?
We will have to wait and see: it is not unlikely that one of the two movies will be postponed. Unlike with "Barbie" and "Oppenheimer", the target audiences for these two movies could be too similar. In that case, they might end up hurting each other at the box office rather than benefiting from the hype.
