Fans have been waiting for another installment of "Pirates of the Caribbean" for over nine years now. Many are wondering: Will Johnny Depp star in "Pirates of the Caribbean 6"? Now, producer Jerry Bruckheimer has commented on whether we'll see the Hollywood star once again as the pirate Jack Sparrow in the sixth installment. He didn't give a definitive answer. But his words make it clear that there is apparently interest in another pirate adventure with Depp – and that things are already moving in that direction.

During the Disney D23 event, Bruckheimer spoke with Deadline. When asked about "Pirates of the Caribbean 6," he revealed:

"We're talking with Johnny [Depp], we're working on a screenplay, and hopefully we can get this done."

So, discussions are definitely taking place. The question is whether they'll ultimately be able to reach an agreement with the actor. And: What role Jack Sparrow will play in "Pirates of the Caribbean 6." According to Deadline, Johnny Depp's famous character is set to play only a side character in the new film, as the website claims to have learned from unnamed sources. Instead, the focus will be on a character portrayed by Margot Robbie. The actress is set to play the lead role in the sixth installment of the pirate series. Robbie's casting in "Pirates of the Caribbean 6" has been the subject of speculation for some time. Jerry Bruckheimer commented on the matter half a year ago. At that time, he confirmed that talks with Robbie were underway.

Margot Robbie and Johnny Depp: New projects in the pipeline

The actress has been one of Hollywood's most in-demand stars for years. Ever since her role as the titular heroine in the hugely successful "Barbie" movie, Robbie has been impossible to ignore. Most recently, she appeared on the big screen alongside Jacob Elordi in the romance "Wuthering Heights." In the planned "Ocean's Eleven" prequel, she is set to play the lead role alongside Bradley Cooper.

When it comes to new roles, however, things have been a bit quieter for Johnny Depp in recent years. However, with the fantasy film "Ebenezer" and the action thriller "Day Drinker," the Hollywood star has two new projects in the pipeline that are likely to bring him back into the global spotlight. The first trailer for "Ebenezer" was recently released, offering a sneak peek at this reimagining of Charles Dickens' "A Christmas Carol," as you can see here:

Bruckheimer knows a thing or two about blockbusters

Jerry Bruckheimer has been one of Hollywood's most successful producers for decades. He also scored massive blockbuster hits with the "Pirates of the Caribbean" series. The pirate franchise, whose most recent installment was released in 2017, has grossed over $4.5 billion at the global box office with its five films to date. But those are by no means the only hits the now 82-year-old producer has had over the course of his career. Among his greatest successes are also the two "Top Gun" films, which grossed a combined total of 1.8 billion worldwide. These are joined by hits such as "Beverly Hills Cop," "Days of Thunder," "Bad Boys," and "Armageddon," with which he left his mark on action cinema of the 1980s and 1990s in particular. In the 2000s, he also made his mark on television, leaving a lasting impact on the crime drama genre as the producer of the successful "CSI" franchise.

In 2023, as the producer of "Top Gun: Maverick," he was nominated for an Oscar for Best Picture for the first time in his career. Three years later, he received this honor once again: At the 2026 awards ceremony, the Formula 1 drama "F1," which he produced, was also among the ten Oscar nominees in the "Best Picture" category. Whether he'll achieve the same success with "Pirates of the Caribbean 6" remains to be seen. Another box office hit, however, wouldn't be all that surprising – with or without Johnny Depp.
