Disney fans have something to look forward to! "Lilo & Stitch 2" is set to hit theaters on May 26, 2028. The director for the sequel has finally been confirmed.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Chris Sanders, who co-created the 2002 animated film, will direct the project. Sanders has close ties to the story of the unusual duo Lilo and Stitch. Not only did he create the character of the chaotic alien, but he also voiced Stitch in both the animated classic and the live-action film. He also served as a screenwriter on the live-action adaptation.

Filming for Part 2 is set to begin later this year. However, this will not be a traditional sequel, but rather an entirely new story. "Lilo & Stitch" became a billion-dollar hit for Disney last year. In the U.S. alone, the film grossed approximately $423.7 million.

From Hawaii to outer space: The success story of the "Lilo & Stitch" films – an unusual Disney classic captures the hearts of audiences

When "Lilo & Stitch" hit theaters in 2002, the film was a bit of a surprise. While Disney was best known at the time for grand fairy-tale adventures, princesses, and classic hero stories, this tale of a lonely girl from Hawaii and a chaotic alien drew on different strengths: humor, emotion, and an unusually realistic portrayal of family.

The plot centers on Lilo Pelekai, who lives with her older sister Nani after the death of their parents. The two try to stick together despite their difficult situation when suddenly an extraordinary visitor enters their lives: Experiment 626, a genetically engineered alien who was developed as a dangerous weapon and crashes on Earth. Lilo names him Stitch – and what starts as a disaster blossoms into an unbreakable friendship.

The famous message "Ohana means family" made the film an emotional favorite with audiences. The blend of Hawaiian culture, science-fiction adventure, slapstick humor, and a touching story about togetherness ensured that Stitch became one of the most beloved characters in the Disney universe.

The first sequels expand the Stitch universe

The success of the original led to several more films and an animated series. It all began in 2003 with "Stitch! The Movie", which served as a bridge to the later TV series. The story revealed that Stitch wasn't the only experiment conducted by the scientist Dr. Jumba Jookiba. Hundreds of other experiments made their way to Earth and had to be found by Lilo and Stitch and set on the right path.

"Lilo & Stitch 2: Stitch Has a Glitch" followed in 2005, another adventure set before the events of the series. The story centers on a glitch in Stitch's programming that causes him to spiral out of control and even puts his life at risk. The film places particular emphasis on the deep friendship between Lilo and Stitch and is considered by many fans to be one of the most emotional installments in the series.

The Grand Finale of the Animated Era

In 2006, "Leroy & Stitch" marked the conclusion of the original film series and, at the same time, the finale of the successful animated series. Lilo, Stitch, and their friends must face their most dangerous enemy yet: the evil scientist Dr. Hamsterviel and his own experiment, Leroy – a red and even more dangerous version of Stitch. The film bid farewell to the first major era of the series and showed just how much Stitch had evolved from a destructive experiment into a true member of the family.

The Return to the Big Screen as a Live-Action Film

Nearly two decades after the success of the animated classic, Disney brought "Lilo & Stitch" back to theaters as a live-action film. The movie combined real actors with modern computer animation and retold the familiar story for a new generation of viewers.

The film appealed not only to young families but also to longtime fans who had grown up with the original. The blend of nostalgia, cutting-edge technology, and the timeless message of ohana made this reimagining a global cinematic event. With box office receipts exceeding one billion U.S. dollars, the live-action adaptation became one of the biggest successes among Disney's remakes.

The future still belongs to Ohana

More than 20 years after his first appearance, Stitch has long been more than just a cute blue alien. The story of Lilo and her unusual friend remains one of the most beautiful messages in film history: family isn't just about blood ties – family means being there for one another and leaving no one behind.
