Spider-Man: Brand New Day becomes the highest-grossing domestic box office hit

The U.S. movie industry has a new box office leader! For over a decade, "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" was considered the highest-grossing movie in US box-office history. But as had already become apparent over the past few days and weeks, "Spider-Man: Brand New Day" has now taken the top spot.

Spider-Man 4 Sets a Record at the U.S. Box Office

According to figures from BoxOfficeMojo, the Tom Holland film has currently grossed around $936.8 million. "The Force Awakens," meanwhile, stands at approximately $936.7 million. It's also noteworthy that "Brand New Day" managed to break the record in just about a month and a half. "Spider-Man" now has time to extend the record even further.

The Marvel blockbuster also has a chance to set another record: "Brand New Day" could become the first film in history to break the billion-dollar mark at the U.S. box office. However, this feat is likely to prove difficult.

Lucasfilm, by the way, has already reacted on social media. The film studio behind "Star Wars" congratulated director Destin Daniel Cretton, Tom Holland, and the entire "Brand New Day" team on the new record. Alongside a photo of Spider-Man striking a victory pose, they shared the words: "The Force is strong with you!"

A Different Movie Still Rules the Worldwide Box Office

So while "Brand New Day" has broken the domestic record in the U.S., the top spot on the global box office charts remains unchanged. James Cameron's "Avatar" continues to reign supreme there with total earnings of approximately $2.924 billion. "Spider-Man 4," however, has recently climbed to third place. Currently, the Marvel blockbuster has grossed approximately $2.453 billion worldwide. So it's still a long way from "Avatar."

The Most Successful Movies in the U.S.

But aside from "Brand New Day" and "The Force Awakens," which films have been particularly successful in the U.S. so far? In third place is "Avengers: Endgame." The 2019 Marvel epic grossed $858.4 million in the U.S. alone.

Following that is "Spider-Man: No Way Home," which was released in 2021 and created a special cinematic moment with the convergence of different Spider-Man versions. Its U.S. box office total is $814.9 million. "No Way Home's" ranking once again underscores Spider-Man's immense popularity in the U.S. Finally, "Avatar" takes fifth place. The blockbuster grossed $785.2 million at the U.S. box office.

Tom Holland has also spoken several times in the past about his future as Peter Parker. In the long term, the actor plans to pass the torch. On the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Holland revealed that there's already a concrete plan in place for this.

"There's a whole plan that we have been working on for, I would say, since we finished 'Spider-Man: No Way Home.' It's laid out. It's gonna change for sure, but I have a really clear vision to the passing on of the baton, and I think it's really exciting."
