Are you ready for a family vacation that goes completely off the rails? Bob Odenkirk returns as Hutch Mansell in "Nobody 2" and proves that even the most relaxing getaway can turn into an explosive fight for survival – that is, if you mess with the wrong people. Find out in today's KinoCheck film review whether the sequel is worth your time!

A Different Kind of Vacation

At its core, "Nobody 2" is a family story. Hutch travels with his loved ones to an amusement park to enjoy a well-deserved break from his dangerous life as an assassin. The only problem? The park happens to be located in an area known for frequent drug smuggling. Before long, our main character finds himself up against corrupt cops and a dangerous gangster lady who are out to get him. Naturally, things get violent – fast. While the plot isn't exactly groundbreaking, that's not really the point anyway – the focus lies elsewhere.

Hard-hitting and Creative Action

It becomes clear within just a few minutes: hard-hitting action is the order of the day here. Blood splatters and bones crack. There are several truly creative kills that ensure a few "ouch" moments! Particularly noteworthy are two set pieces that take place in an arcade and on a boat. Whenever Hutch loses his cool, he resorts to using whatever's at hand to fight back.

However, you have to make a few compromises here and there, as especially the close-quarters fighting feels quite hectic and confusingly shot at first. This improves as the film progresses but is a noticeable shift from its predecessor. The fact that things get pretty brutal here is largely thanks to filmmaker Timo Tjahjanto, who took audiences by surprise in 2018 with his action film "The Night Comes for Us". Although "Nobody 2" is not quite as explicit as the Indonesian action hit, the movie certainly doesn't hold back.

Amid all the adrenaline, the film also takes time for a few more serious, almost melancholic moments. These mainly occur between Hutch and his wife, played by Connie Nielsen. It becomes clear here that the life of an assassin also comes with significant risks, in particular when it comes to the safety of one's own family.

The Cast

Bob Odenkirk once again brings an impressive presence to the screen and is in peak form! Hutch can deal some heavy blows, but he's not the sleek action hero like John Wick. Instead, he is the headstrong type – hell-bent on getting his own way. Naturally, that means he also takes quite a few punches along the way. Alongside Connie Nielsen, "Back to the Future" legend Christopher Lloyd and RZA return as well, though in our opinion, they don't get enough screen time. On the other hand, Hollywood diva Sharon Stone clearly has a blast playing a crime boss. Her role is strictly villainous and doesn't truly come into play until the second half of the film, but she definitely leaves a lasting impression.

Weaknesses in Storytelling and Runtime

Despite the convincing action and a strong cast, "Nobody 2" is not free of flaws. Its 90-minute running time often feels longer than it actually is. Things noticeably drag in the middle, causing the movie to lose some of its momentum. Overall, there are very few surprises, and quite frankly, you can predict from the outset how things will unfold. It is essentially a typical sequel with all its ups and downs.

Conclusion

In summary, it can be said that "Nobody 2" is still a thoroughly entertaining action movie that should especially appeal to fans of the first installment. However, those hoping for a little more creativity in the storytelling or perhaps the occasional surprise might be left disappointed. That said, we are looking forward to a potential third installment – hopefully with a bit more boldness!
