The cast of Disney's live-action adaptation of "Tangled" continues to grow. As reported by Deadline magazine, "Outlander" star Caitríona Balfe will now take on the role of Queen Arianna.

In addition to Balfe, several other new cast members have been announced. Elliot Cowan, known for his role in "The Crown", will play King Frederic. Patrick and Hugo McPherson will portray the infamous Stabbington twins. Rapunzel will be played by Teagan Croft, who is best known for her portrayal of Raven in the DC series "Titans". Milo Manheim will play Flynn Rider, while Kathryn Hahn will portray the scheming Mother Gothel. Diego Luna is also part of the cast. However, the "Andor" star will not be playing a familiar character from the animated film, but rather a new character named Hawthorne.

Michael Gracey, who has already demonstrated his flair for large-scale musical productions with "The Greatest Showman", will direct. However, we'll have to be patient for a while longer. Disney announced at D23 that the live-action adaptation isn't set to hit theaters until March 31, 2028.

The Phenomenon of the Animated Film "Tangled"

With "Tangled", Disney achieved a major success in 2010. The film, loosely based on the Brothers Grimm fairy tale, remains one of the most popular Disney animated films of the 21st century and enjoys a strong reputation among fans and critics alike. It marked not only a creative revival of classic fairy-tale material but also a stylistic turning point for Disney Animation.

Why is the film so popular?

A key reason for the film's enduring popularity lies in its successful reinterpretation of a well-known story. "Tangled" retells the classic fairy tale with plenty of humor, pace, and emotional depth, without losing sight of its fairy-tale roots. The title character is not a passive princess, but a curious, self-determined young woman with dreams, doubts, and the courage to embrace change. This modern characterization struck a chord with younger viewers in particular, but also appealed to adult audiences.

Rapunzel and Flynn Rider

The cast of characters also played a major role in the film's success. The dynamic relationship between Rapunzel and the charming, ironic thief Flynn Rider provided humor, romance, and emotional growth on equal footing. Flynn Rider deliberately broke with the classic ideal of a prince, and it was precisely this that made him one of the most popular male Disney characters. The ensemble was rounded out by memorable supporting characters such as the chameleon Pascal, the horse Maximus, and the manipulative villain Mother Gothel.

The Film's Music

The musical quality of the film should also not be underestimated. The songs have long been part of the canon of modern Disney classics. The music conveys emotions, drives the plot forward and is still a key factor in the film's enduring popularity today.

The Modern Look

Visually, "Tangled" also set new standards. The innovative blend of 3D animation and a painterly style gave the film a new aesthetic that deliberately set it apart from realistic animations. Among other things, the famous scene with the floating lanterns remains etched in the memories of many Disney fans.

All these elements made "Tangled" a film whose impact extended far beyond its 2010 theatrical release. It influenced later Disney productions, contributed to the reimagining of female protagonists, and became an integral part of pop culture. Merchandising and a loyal fan base attest to the film's enduring success.

The Challenge of a Live-Action Adaptation

Given this background, it's hardly surprising that Disney is now venturing into a live-action adaptation of the story. The film's widespread popularity, the emotional connection many fans feel to it, and the timeless quality of the story make "Tangled" a prime candidate for a live-action adaptation. But one thing is also clear: the bar for the remake is set correspondingly high due to the popularity of the animated film. We're definitely excited and looking forward to seeing it in theaters!
