Fans will need a bit more patience

A major update on two highly anticipated Disney projects! Following the box office success of "Lilo & Stitch" in 2025, Disney has finally announced the release date for the sequel. But that's not all: at the same time, Pixar revealed the theatrical release for "Incredibles 3".

Lilo and Stitch 2: What is known

The sequel to "Lilo & Stitch" has been set for some time now. No wonder: the live-action adaptation was one of the most financially successful films worldwide in 2025. It has not yet been officially confirmed who from the cast of the first film will also appear in the sequel. However, many cast and crew members are very likely to return.

The screenplay will be written by Chris Sanders. Sanders is a true veteran in the animation sector. He already directed the first "Lilo & Stitch" animated film and is also known for "How to Train Your Dragon" and "The Wild Robot". He also lends his voice to Stitch.

The "Lilo & Stitch" animated film also received sequels and spin-offs at the time, including "Lilo & Stitch 2: Stitch Has a Glitch". It will be interesting to see whether the second live-action film will be based on an animated movie or whether it will attempt to tell a new story.

The start date for Lilo & Stitch 2

Either way, fans will have to be patient for a while yet. "Lilo & Stitch 2" is set to be released almost exactly three years after the first film. The theatrical release is scheduled for May 26, 2028. This means that, as with part 1, the release date is once again on Memorial Day weekend. Here you can watch a first short teaser for the announcement of "Lilo & Stitch 2".

The start date for Incredibles 3

"Incredibles 3" has also been set for a while. The new installment of the popular animated film series will not be directed by Brad Bird this time. Instead, it will be directed by Peter Sohn. Sohn is no stranger to the Pixar cosmos: he directed "Elemental", for example. Bird will nevertheless be responsible for the story.

As with "Lilo & Stitch", the return of the likeable superhero family is still a long time coming. "Incredibles 3" can be seen in cinemas from June 16, 2028. That's a whole ten years between parts 2 and 3.

The Lilo & Stitch phenomenon

Both "Lilo & Stitch" and "The Incredibles" have been among the most popular series from Disney and Pixar for years. The "Lilo & Stitch" franchise began in 2002 with the animated film of the same name and tells the story of the unusual friendship between the Hawaiian girl Lilo and the alien experiment Stitch. The focus is on themes such as family, togetherness and belonging – it is not for nothing that "Ohana" became one of the defining guiding principles of the series.

In addition to the original film, several sequels, series and spin-offs followed, which expanded the story around Stitch and other experiments. The live-action adaptation of 2025 revisited this basic idea and made the material accessible to a modern audience.

The phenomenon of The Incredibles

The first film of "The Incredibles" was released in 2004 and set new standards for superhero stories in animation. It focuses on the Parr family, who try to lead a normal life – even though each member has special abilities. Director Brad Bird combined action-packed superhero elements with a surprisingly personal story about family, identity and social expectations. The 2018 sequel followed on from this and, above all, deepened the dynamics within the family.

Both franchises are ultimately united by their focus on interpersonal relationships – be it the unusual "Ohana" in "Lilo & Stitch" or the family in the Parrs. The fact that both series are now being continued at almost the same time should please fans of classic Disney and Pixar adventures in particular.
