Mamma Mia 3: Amanda Seyfried talks about the sequel
What does the future hold for ABBA musical films?
Here we go again? There has been talk of another installment of the "Mamma Mia!" films for some time. Now leading actress Amanda Seyfried has also spoken to Deadline about the future of the series.
The key message: the actress assumes that "Mamma Mia 3!" is coming! According to Seyfried, a realization of the film for the studio Universal is a matter of timing. However, Universal has yet to make an official announcement. But producer Judy Craymer also expressed her confidence to Deadline months ago – and more or less confirmed the film.
"Well, we know what we want to do with the movie, and it will happen. And I mean, we brought together this amazing group of movie stars that were all connected through it and huge friendships evolved."
Craymer also revealed that a script already exists. However, it is unlikely to be released in the near future. This would first require an official announcement from Universal. We'll keep you up to date!
Mamma Mia! Why the ABBA musicals are so popular
Both "Mamma Mia!" and "Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again" are among the defining musical films of the 21st century. The two films combine charming love stories, sunny backdrops and the timeless hits of the Swedish cult band ABBA to create a feel-good experience that inspires generations.
Story and themes
At the center of "Mamma Mia!" is Sophie (Amanda Seyfried), who wants to get married on a picturesque Greek island – without knowing who her biological father is. When she invites three possible candidates from her mother Donna's (Meryl Streep) past, the chaos takes its course. The sequel tells, among other things, how young Donna (Lily James) once came to Greece and met the three men.
Although the plot is rather simple, the films unfold through themes such as family, self-discovery, love and loss. The mixture of lightness and touching moments is a key success factor.
ABBA: The soundtrack of the movie
What makes "Mamma Mia!" unique is the skillful use of ABBA songs. Hits such as "Dancing Queen", "The Winner Takes It All", "Super Trouper" or "Fernando" are not just musical interludes. They often carry the plot or reflect the feelings of the characters. The lyrics fit in surprisingly well with the dialog. Even lesser-known songs are given a new lease of life in the films.
For many viewers, the ABBA songs are a piece of musical nostalgia – regardless of whether they experienced the band themselves or only discovered them through the films. The music is timeless, stirring and emotional – a soundtrack that puts you in a good mood but also touches you.
Star cast with charm and humor
Another attraction of the "Mamma Mia!" films is their top-class cast. Meryl Streep is a delight in the role of the independent Donna with charisma, wit and a surprisingly strong singing voice. Amanda Seyfried lends Sophie a youthful freshness and depth of feeling. She is joined by big names such as Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth and Stellan Skarsgård, who throw themselves into the musical adventure with a great deal of self-irony. In the sequel, Lily James as young Donna and Cher as Donna's mother provide new impetus.
Setting & atmosphere
The Greek islands, the glittering sea, white houses, colorful parties and sunsets also make the films a visual vacation for the mind. In a world full of stress, crises and hectic, "Mamma Mia!" and "Here We Go Again" offer a time-out that is carefree, cheerful and colorful.
Feel-good factor
The "Mamma Mia!" films work through humor, emotion and catchy tunes. They offer lightness with heart – musical feel-good cinema. They live from their rousing music and the courage to not always take themselves seriously.
It will be interesting to see what another sequel to "Mamma Mia!" would look like. We can only hope that the strengths of the first two films can be maintained. We are also looking forward to the cast. We can certainly expect to see one or two familiar faces again. In the meantime, you can take another look at "Mamma Mia! 2" here.
