"Backrooms" is set to return to U.S. theaters – in an extended version. Audiences will be treated to 15 additional minutes, which will apparently be shown after the credits, according to Variety. Titled "Backrooms: Everything Must Go Edition," the extended version of the acclaimed horror film is set to premiere in the U.S. on July 3.

At the center of "Backrooms" is Clark (played by Chiwetel Ejiofor), a failed architect. Instead of pursuing a career, he has to sell furniture and slip into pirate costumes to promote the store. To make matters worse, Clark's wife has left him. He drowns his sorrows in alcohol, but at least he seeks help: in regular therapy sessions, he confides in Dr. Mary Kline (Renate Reinsve). So far, so ordinary. Reality, however, is thrown into serious disarray when he makes a creepy discovery. Inside the furniture store, there's a series of mysterious, seemingly endless rooms. Clark is curious and begins to explore them. But he soon realizes he's not alone there – and the horror begins.

Backrooms has broken several records

"Backrooms" proved to be a massive hit in theaters. The unusual horror hit by director Kane Parsons, based on his YouTube web series of the same name, has grossed $330 million at the global box office so far – on a production budget of just $10 million. In the year-to-date charts, "Backrooms" currently ranks 10th among the world's most successful films. As far as the horror genre is concerned, Parsons' film is currently in second place on the year-to-date charts. Only "Obsession," with 371 million so far, is more successful. The film, directed by Curry Barker, tells the story of a young man who, with the help of a supernatural toy, has his greatest wish granted: the woman of his dreams falls madly in love with him – with horrific consequences. Alongside "Backrooms," "Obsession" is the other major horror hit causing a sensation this year – especially since Barker, at 26, is barely older than Parsons and is receiving just as much hype.

But "Backrooms" isn't just featured in the 2026 charts. The film has also broken several records. Particularly noteworthy: "Backrooms" is already the most successful A24 film of all time. Furthermore, at 21, Parsons is the youngest director at the trendy film studio – and the youngest director whose film landed at number 1 on the box office charts upon its release. But "Backrooms" wasn't just a financial success. The film has also received high praise from critics, who have highlighted its atmosphere, sound, and visual style, among other things. Parsons also managed to secure two high-profile actors for his horror hit: Chiwetel Ejiofor (known for roles in the Marvel blockbuster "Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness," among others) and Renate Reinsve (who most recently made a name for herself in "Sentimental Value").

The chances of a second installment of Backrooms look good

Given its huge success, "Backrooms 2" is probably just a matter of time. Just recently, Deadline reported that Parsons is already looking for a screenwriter for the sequel. The director has spoken out several times about potential sequels to his horror hit. According to Parsons, the first film was just the beginning of several narrative steps. We can't wait to see what else awaits us in the eponymous backrooms.
