Filming for Avengers: Secret Wars Apparently Postponed – Is the Theatrical Release in Jeopardy?
The Russo brothers remain optimistic nonetheless
This rumor is likely to cause some uncertainty! Industry insider Daniel Richtman announced on his blog that filming for "Avengers: Secret Wars" has apparently been postponed. This raises the question of whether the planned December 17, 2027, theatrical release is now in jeopardy.
According to Richtman, principal photography is now scheduled to begin in February 2027. This would leave only about ten months between production and the planned theatrical release. For a blockbuster of this magnitude, that would be an extremely tight schedule, raising serious doubts as to whether we'll even get to see "Secret Wars" next year.
By comparison, filming for "Avengers: Doomsday" began as early as May 2025 – about 19 months before its planned theatrical release on December 18, 2026. In the meantime, there were even reports that work on "Secret Wars" had already begun in the spring. However, the actual principal photography was slow to get underway. Initially, there was talk of a start in November 2026, then January 2027 – and now it apparently looks like it will be February.
The Russo brothers, however, apparently remain optimistic. According to rumors, scenes intended for the sequel were also filmed during the additional shooting for "Avengers: Doomsday". Previously, the directors announced that, unlike with "Infinity War" and "Endgame", they didn't plan to shoot the two new "Avengers" films back-to-back anyway. So it remains to be seen when principal photography for the grand finale of the Multiverse saga will actually begin. But we'll keep you posted!
New Cast Member and Hawkeye's Return
The blockbuster's cast is also drawing extra attention. As Deadline magazine recently reported, "Hamnet" actor Noah Jupe is set to take on a role in the film. Which character he'll play has been kept under wraps so far. However, Jupe's casting likely won't be the only casting surprise. There might also be a comeback or two from some of the original cast members. Just recently, rumors surfaced that Jeremy Renner is set to return as Clint Barton, aka Hawkeye, in "Avengers: Secret Wars". In an Instagram Story, Jeremy Renner posted a photo of the Marvel hero's costume – which, of course, has sparked speculation.

In addition, Samuel L. Jackson recently announced in an interview with The Direct that he'll soon be appearing in another MCU film. However, he wasn't referring to "Avengers: Doomsday". When asked about his iconic role, the actor announced his return with these words: "Next movie… [the] next movie after this one."
This apparently refers to a return in "Avengers: Secret Wars" – the next MCU movie after "Doomsday". Jackson was also asked if he could already reveal anything about the plot of "Secret Wars". His response:
"I have no idea. [Marvel] hasn't told me anything, other than, You're not gonna be in this movie. You'll be in the next."
Jackson made his most recent MCU film appearance in 2023 in "The Marvels", alongside Brie Larson and others. That same year, he also appeared in the Disney+ series "Secret Invasion". Little is known about "Secret Wars" yet. In any case, many superhero fans are initially looking forward to "Doomsday". Marvel has already released an official synopsis for it:
"'Avengers: Doomsday' follows beloved heroes from three distinct universes as they're set on a deadly collision course and face an existential threat unlike anything they've ever encountered."
