Major updates on the "Elden Ring" movie! Film studio A24 and Bandai Namco Entertainment have revealed the official release date. But that's not all: they also announced the full cast for the video game adaptation. The lineup includes quite a few popular names.

The Cast of the Elden Ring Movie

It had already been leaked beforehand that "Warfare" actor Kit Connor might take on a leading role. His casting has now been officially confirmed. The actor is also listed at the very top of the ensemble, making it highly likely that he will play the film's main character.

New to the cast is Cailee Spaeny, best known for "Alien: Romulus" and "Civil War." Comedy icon Nick Offerman ("The Last of Us") is also part of the cast. Like Connor, the name Ben Whishaw has been circulating for several months and has now been confirmed. Whishaw is known, among other things, for playing Q in the "James Bond" films.

Also on board are "Pirates of the Caribbean" actor Jonathan Pryce, "Ex Machina" actress Sonoya Mizuno, and Tom Burke, known from the "Mad Max" film "Furiosa." The cast is rounded out by "Bottoms" actresses Havana Rose Liu and Ruby Cruz, as well as John Hodgkinson, Jefferson Hall, Emma Laird, and Peter Serafinowicz.

What is already known?

Behind the film is mastermind Alex Garland, who already has years of experience in Hollywood. Garland will both write and direct the project. The "Elden Ring" movie is a live-action adaptation of the dark fantasy game of the same name, written by "Game of Thrones" author George R.R. Martin. Exact details about the film's plot are not yet known. However, an alleged leak is currently fueling speculation among fans. You can find all the details here.

The release date

What is now certain, however, is the release date for the "Elden Ring" film adaptation. Fans will have to be patient, though. Production on the film begins in spring 2026, with the theatrical release following a good two years later on March 3, 2028. "Elden Ring" will be shot in IMAX and is therefore likely to have a lot to offer visually.

Elden Ring: The Video Game Phenomenon

Released in 2022, "Elden Ring" is an action RPG developed by FromSoftware. Under the direction of legendary game designer Hidetaka Miyazaki and in collaboration with George R. R. Martin, the game presents a dark, melancholic world known as the Lands Between. Players take on the role of a "Tarnished," tasked with collecting the shards of the shattered Elden Ring and rising to become the Elden Lord. The game features a vast open world that encourages exploration, rewarding curiosity and discovery.

But "Elden Ring" is far more than just a successful video game – it has become a true pop culture phenomenon. With over 30 million copies sold and multiple "Game of the Year" awards, it has propelled the once-niche "Soulslike" genre firmly into the mainstream. Its dense atmosphere and the monumental lore crafted by George R. R. Martin provide the perfect foundation for a cinematic adaptation.

The mastermind behind the camera: Alex Garland

The fact that Alex Garland is taking the helm is raising expectations among movie fans. Garland is considered one of the most visionary minds in modern genre cinema. He has primarily worked in the science fiction genre. Garland is known for combining profound philosophical questions with an impressive visual language.

Early in his career, Garland worked as a screenwriter, penning the scripts for Danny Boyle's films "28 Days Later" and "Sunshine," among others. He made his directorial debut with "Ex Machina," a psychological chamber drama about artificial intelligence. This was followed by "Annihilation" starring Natalie Portman, a visually stunning sci-fi horror film that was praised for its surreal atmosphere.

He took a creative risk with "Civil War," a dystopian drama about a modern-day civil war in the U.S. that sparked controversy even before its release. Most recently, he directed the war film "Warfare" and wrote the screenplays for the "28 Years Later" films. We can now look forward with anticipation to seeing what Garland will do with the "Elden Ring" material.
