Heat 2: First hints about the roles of Leonardo DiCaprio, Christian Bale, and others
The story of "Heat 2" is both a sequel and a prequel
Hot news about "Heat 2": Now that it's already been confirmed that Michael Mann's sequel will feature a star-studded cast, insider Daniel Richtman reports that the first details about the roles of Leonardo DiCaprio, Christian Bale, and others have now leaked.
According to the report, DiCaprio is set to take on the role of Chris Shiherlis, which was played by Val Kilmer in the first film. Christian Bale is apparently set to play the ambitious LAPD investigator Vincent Hanna, following in the footsteps of Al Pacino. Stephen Graham, meanwhile, is said to be portraying the legendary gangster boss Neil McCauley, a character viewers know from the original film as played by Robert De Niro.
"Star Wars" star Adam Driver is also being linked to the sequel once again. While earlier reports had him as a possible Neil McCauley, he is now reportedly set to play the dangerous criminal Otis Wardel. This character is considered particularly important to the plot, as he links the film's two time periods. Additionally, Jason Clarke, known for his role in "Terminator: Genisys" among others, is also said to be part of the project, though his role has not yet been revealed.
The story of "Heat 2" is both a sequel and a prequel. On the one hand, the plot continues after the events of the first film. Chris Shiherlis has fled to South America, where he works for a powerful crime syndicate. Vincent Hanna, however, is doing everything in his power to continue pursuing him and bring him to justice.
On the other hand, the film tells a prequel story set in the late 1980s. This phase sheds light on the early criminal activities of Neil McCauley, Chris Shiherlis, and their gang. At the same time, the plot follows a young Vincent Hanna as he builds his reputation with the Chicago Police Department. Filming could begin as early as the end of this year. However, a release date has not yet been set.
Movie recommendations for Heat fans: These crime thrillers will help pass the time while waiting for Heat 2
With "Heat", director and screenwriter Michael Mann created one of the best crime thrillers of all time in 1995. The story of master thief Neil McCauley and the obsessed investigator Vincent Hanna continues to captivate audiences today with its intense atmosphere, complex characters, and some of the most thrilling action scenes in film history. As anticipation for "Heat 2" continues to grow, many fans are looking for movies that offer a similar experience. If you want to bridge the gap until the sequel arrives, be sure to check out these five thrillers.
Triple 9 (2016)
"Triple 9" is one of those films that many viewers consider a sort of spiritual successor to "Heat". This dark thriller tells the story of corrupt cops and ex-soldiers who, under pressure from the Russian mafia, are forced to carry out a nearly impossible heist. To increase their chances of success, they plan a so-called "Triple 9" – the code for a police officer killed in the line of duty.
With its star-studded cast, gritty urban atmosphere, and realistically staged shootouts, the film repeatedly brings to mind Michael Mann's masterpiece. Fans of uncompromising action and morally ambiguous characters will especially get their money's worth here.

The Town (2010)
Ben Affleck's thriller tells the story of a group of bank robbers from Boston planning one last big heist. In the process, their leader finds himself torn between his criminal life and the desire for a fresh start. "The Town" is reminiscent of "Heat" in many ways. The robbers are not portrayed as one-dimensional criminals, but as people with their own dreams, fears, and moral conflicts. Add to that superbly staged heists and an intense car chase that is sure to delight fans of Michael Mann's classic.
Den of Thieves (2018)
Anyone who loves "Heat" for its cat-and-mouse game between criminals and law enforcement should definitely give "Den of Thieves" a chance. The film follows an elite unit of the Los Angeles Sheriff's Department as they track down a group of professional bank robbers.
The parallels to "Heat" are unmistakable. From the meticulously planned heists and the gang's professional approach to the tense rivalry between the main characters, much of the film evokes Michael Mann's classic. Gerard Butler and Pablo Schreiber deliver strong performances, while the action-packed shootouts provide plenty of suspense.

Inside Man (2006)
Spike Lee's thriller revolves around a seemingly perfect bank heist in New York. While the police try to bring the situation under control, the ringleader of the robbers pursues a plan that goes far beyond ordinary loot. While "Inside Man" offers less action than "Heat," it impresses with clever twists and a clever cat-and-mouse game between criminals and investigators. Fans of the tactical duels between Neil McCauley and Vincent Hanna will especially get their money's worth here.
Ronin (1998)
"Ronin" is one of the most underrated action thrillers of the 1990s. Robert De Niro plays a former secret agent who, together with a team of specialists, carries out a mysterious mission. It quickly turns into a dangerous game full of betrayal and double identities. The film excels with realistic action, a high level of suspense, and some of the best car chases in film history. The characters' professional approach and the film's understated direction are strongly reminiscent of the world of "Heat".
A classic that still sets the standard today
Many films have tried to copy "Heat's" blend of character drama, crime story, and action. Few, however, achieve the same intensity and credibility. Films like "Triple 9", "The Town", "Den of Thieves", "Inside Man", or "Ronin", however, come surprisingly close to capturing the unique feel of the Michael Mann classic.
Until "Heat 2" finally hits theaters, these thrillers offer the perfect opportunity to dive back into the world of professional criminals, obsessed investigators, and nerve-wracking showdowns. For fans of the original, they are the ideal way to get in the mood for the return of one of the greatest crime franchises in film history.
