The horror hit "Obsession" is one of the cinematic sensations of the year. Now, director Curry Barker has spoken out about a possible sequel. The good news: He has apparently already given some serious thought to another installment – even if he's not giving anything away just yet. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Barker reveals:

"I have such a cool idea for it that I won't say."

Sounds vague, but promising! Given the box-office success of "Obsession," it's likely only a matter of time before the horror film gets a sequel. There is one downside, however: We'll probably have to wait quite a while before the sequel hits theaters.

"I don't want to go straight into Obsession 2. [...] I'm not saying it has to be five, six years from now. But I think people would be just as excited for it if it came a little down the road."

Sequel to Obsession: In addition to a movie, there could also be a series

In addition to a second film, Barker is also considering an anthology series in which each episode would explore a variation on the premise of "Obsession." The film tells the story of a young man who, with the help of a supernatural toy, has his deepest wish granted: The woman of his dreams falls madly in love with him – with devastating consequences. In the potential series, each episode would revolve around a different wish, as Barker recently explained in an interview with Total Film. He might direct the pilot himself, while the remaining episodes could be directed by different filmmakers. It remains unclear whether this is merely a thought experiment on Barker's part or if there are already concrete plans for its realization.

Huge Box Office success for director Curry Barker

It comes as no surprise that Curry Barker is already thinking about possible sequels to "Obsession." After all, the 26-year-old screenwriter and director has landed a massive hit. The production budget for "Obsession" is said to be just $750,000. In contrast, the horror film has grossed an impressive $290 million worldwide since its U.S. release on May 15. This makes "Obsession" Focus Features' most successful film of all time already. It will be interesting to see what the final total is. After all, "Obsession" is one of the rare cases in which a film has seen its box office receipts at U.S. theaters increase from weekend to weekend over the course of its first three weeks. This hasn't happened – outside of the Christmas season – since the release of Steven Spielberg's "E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial" in 1982. On its first weekend, "Obsession" grossed $17 million; on its second, $24 million; and on its third, a whopping $27 million.

When asked about the astonishing success, Barker told The Hollywood Reporter:

"When it made $27 million, I couldn't believe it. [...] It became a word-of-mouth movie. I started going to the theater to sneak in and watch the film too because I wanted to be part of this thing."

Curry Barker's new film: Anything but Ghosts

Curry Barker serves as director and screenwriter for "Obsession." The cast includes Michael Johnston, Inde Navarrette, Megan Lawless, Andy Richter, and Cooper Tomlinson. Tomlinson is also an actor in the director's next film, "Anything but Ghosts." Barker co-wrote the screenplay with Tomlinson and will appear on screen alongside his co-writer. The cast also includes Aaron Paul, Bryce Dallas Howard, and Violet McGraw. "Anything but Ghosts" centers on con artists who pose as ghost hunters – and one day find themselves inside a real haunted house. As you can see, Barker remains true to the horror genre.
