Monsterverse Series on Apple TV: Giancarlo Esposito and Tim Robbins Join the Cast
Their roles are still unknown
The MonsterVerse continues to grow: In addition to the third season of "Monarch", another series set in the world of Godzilla and Kong is in the works. As Variety magazine has now announced, Giancarlo Esposito and "The Shawshank Redemption" cult star Tim Robbins are joining the cast in guest roles.
Alongside lead actor Wyatt Russell, the cast also includes Millie Brady, "Game of Thrones" star Pilou Asbaek, Ralph Ineson, and Connie Nielsen. Russell will once again take on the role of young Colonel Lee Shaw, whom we already know from the Apple TV series "Monarch: Legacy of Monsters". The new project is also set in the MonsterVerse but tells a standalone story.
Here's what the new Monsterverse series is about
The plot is set in 1984, in the midst of the Cold War. Lee Shaw is sent on a dangerous mission behind enemy lines. As an American agent, he must prevent the Soviet Union from unleashing a previously unknown titan. The creature poses a threat of immense proportions and could not only destroy the United States but also fundamentally alter the balance of power between the two superpowers.
Behind the new MonsterVerse series are Joby Harold and Tory Tunnell of Safehouse Pictures. In addition to his role as a producer, Harold also serves as showrunner and is working on other projects within the MonsterVerse. Wyatt Russell is also involved as an executive producer. It is not yet known when the as-yet-untitled project will premiere on Apple TV.
The Future of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters
Meanwhile, there's also news about the future of "Monarch: Legacy of Monsters". As was recently reported, the series could undergo a major creative reboot if a third season is greenlit. According to reports, a new writing team is apparently being sought. Potential candidates for the showrunner position are also said to have already been contacted. Until now, the series has been led by Chris Black, who co-developed the show with Matt Fraction.
In addition to personnel changes behind the scenes, new Titans are also set to be introduced in a potential third season. It remains to be seen whether the current main characters will continue to take center stage or if the story will focus more heavily on new characters.
"Monarch: Legacy of Monsters" focuses primarily on the mysterious organization Monarch, which investigates the appearance of the Titans. The story centers on two siblings who want to find out more about their family's connection to the organization. Their investigations lead them not only into the world of gigantic creatures but also to Lee Shaw. The series tells their story across two different time periods and casts Kurt Russell and his son Wyatt Russell in the role of the officer.

The MonsterVerse Keeps Growing
The MonsterVerse is a shared cinematic universe created by Legendary Entertainment, in which some of the most famous giant monsters in cinematic history clash. It began in 2014 with "Godzilla", before another well-known representative of monster cinema, "Kong: Skull Island" three years later. The universe was subsequently expanded with "Godzilla 2: King of the Monsters" (2019) to include additional titans such as Mothra, Rodan, and King Ghidorah.
In 2021 "Godzilla vs. Kong" finally brought about the epic showdown between the two giants. In "Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire" from 2024, however, they had to face a new threat together. And, of course, "Godzilla x Kong: Supernova" is just around the corner, set to be released in 2027. In addition to the feature films, the universe has been further expanded with the animated series "Skull Island" and the aforementioned live-action production "Monarch: Legacy of Monsters".
