Tangled: Live-Action Movie With Scarlett Johansson?

The star is in talks for a unique role

Disney's "Tangled" was a worldwide hit in 2010. A live-action film adaptation has been in the works for some time. Now the industry portal Deadline reports that none other than Scarlett Johansson is being considered for the remake.

The project has been quiet of late – and with good reason. Due to the financial failure of "Snow White" in early 2025, the "Tangled" remake was initially put on hold. But other box-office hits such as "Lilo & Stitch" prove it: Live-action remakes of Disney classics can still enjoy great commercial success.

Production of the "Tangled" live-action adaptation is now progressing again. Scarlett Johansson is said to be in talks for the role of Mother Gothel. Mother Gothel is the manipulative antagonist who keeps Rapunzel in the tower for selfish reasons. Johansson is known for numerous Hollywood films. At the beginning of her career, the superstar attracted attention with "Lost in Translation" and "The Prestige". However, she is best known for her role as Black Widow aka Natasha Romanoff in Marvel's MCU films.

However, the live-action film of "Tangled" is still in the early stages of production – the project has not yet been officially greenlit. According to Deadline, "The Greatest Showman" director Michael Gracey is set to direct. The script will be written by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson.

"Tangled" is without question one of the most popular Disney animated films of the last 20 years. The film reinterpreted the classic "Rapunzel" fairy tale and was able to convince with its charming main characters Rapunzel and Flynn Ryder. Of course, you can currently find the movie in the Disney Plus streaming subscription.

Tangled: a modern fairytale classic

In its reinterpretation, "Tangled" relied on modern elements, humor and stronger character development to appeal to a wider audience. With its success at the box office and its impact on pop culture, "Tangled" is now one of the most important animated films of the 2010s – and marks a decisive turning point in Disney's work.

The plot

At the center of the story is Rapunzel, a young girl with supernaturally long, magical hair that has healing powers and can keep people young. Shortly after her birth, she is kidnapped by Mother Gothel, who uses the magic of Rapunzel's hair to preserve her own youth. Gothel keeps Rapunzel hidden in a remote tower and makes her believe that the outside world is dangerous. Rapunzel grows up isolated – but her fate changes. The charming thief Flynn Rider seeks refuge in her tower while fleeing from the guards. After initial mistrust, Rapunzel persuades him to accompany her on a journey.

Cultural significance and characters

The success of the movie was enormous. With box office takings of over 590 million US dollars worldwide, "Tangled" was one of the most successful Disney films of the time. It helped the studio to regain its former strength. But beyond the figures, the film also had a lasting cultural impact. It continued the development in the portrayal of female lead characters at Disney. Rapunzel is not a passive fairytale princess who needs to be rescued – she acts, she questions, she grows from her experiences. In this respect, she paved the way for later characters such as Elsa, Moana and Raya. Flynn Rider was also an unusual character by Disney standards: Not a perfect prince, but a charismatic anti-hero with a vulnerable past who is transformed by his love for Rapunzel.

Today, over a decade after its premiere, "Tangled" is considered a classic of modern Disney animation. The film not only retold an old fairy tale, but also heralded a new beginning for the studio in terms of style and content. With its unique mix of humor, romance and adventure, it continues to delight audiences of all ages and has secured a permanent place in our cultural memory.
