The first trailer for "The Fantastic Four: First Steps"!
The likeable hero squad officially becomes part of the MCU!
The time has finally come: Reed Richards, Sue Storm, Johnny Storm and Ben Grimm are getting their own movie adventure within the MCU! And now the first trailer for "The Fantastic Four: First Steps" has finally been released!
This is what "The Fantastic Four: First Steps" is all about
The film is set in a retro-futuristic world inspired by the aesthetics of the 1960s, paying homage to the heroes' origins. At the center are established team members Reed Richards, Sue Storm, Johnny Storm and Ben Grimm, who face a new threat: the cosmic god Galactus and his sidekick Silver Surfer.
Marvel hints that Galactus' attack could have a personal dimension, possibly through the introduction of Franklin Richards, Reed and Sue's son, who has immense powers in the comics. There is also speculation as to whether the film will integrate the team into the main MCU universe. Another exciting aspect is a possible cameo appearance by Doctor Doom before he takes on a larger role in "Avengers: Doomsday". The film could thus create a crucial link for future Marvel projects.
Cast and director
Pedro Pascal has been cast as Reed Richards, a surprising but promising choice. Known from "The Mandalorian" and "The Last of Us", he brings charisma and depth to the role of the genius scientist. Reed can stretch his body to extreme lengths and morph into different forms, making him a versatile fighter.
Vanessa Kirby takes on the role of Sue Storm, aka the Invisible Woman. She can make herself and others invisible and generate powerful force fields. Her abilities allow her to use telekinesis and fire shockwaves. The role was previously played by Jessica Alba. In 2015, Kate Mara followed in "Fantastic Four".
"Stranger Things" actor Joseph Quinn takes on Johnny Storm, also known as the Human Torch. Johnny can create and control fire and use it to launch energy attacks. He is also incredibly fast and virtually heat-resistant.
Ben Grimm alias The Thing is embodied by Ebon Moss-Bachrach. The stone monster possesses immense strength and resilience. Despite his tough exterior, he remains a loveable character at heart, who has already become a fan favorite in previous film adaptations.
The casting of the Silver Surfer, on the other hand, caused a stir : contrary to all expectations, we are dealing with a female version of the character, played by Julia Garner. In the comics, Shalla-Bal also becomes the Silver Surfer in order to free her husband Norrin from the clutches of Galactus. So Marvel seems to be staying true to the comics, even if the so-called "gender-swapping" continues to be critically discussed among fans.
Last but not least, we have Ralph Ineson in the role of the mighty Galactus, an ancient planet devourer. Galactus is actually a scientist who, as the last survivor of the past universe, existed before the Big Bang. The villain devours entire worlds and travels the galaxy with an unbridled hunger.
Behind the scenes
The film is directed by Matt Shakman, who made a name for himself in the world of Marvel with his work on "WandaVision". He is supported by screenwriter Josh Friedman, who received many positive reviews for his work on the science fiction series "Foundation".
"The Fantastic Four: First Steps" could become a milestone for the MCU. The film introduces Marvel's "First Family" to a new audience and expands the universe with cosmic elements. With Galactus as a threat and a possible appearance by Doctor Doom, the film could pave the way for further crossovers.
Marvel therefore seems to have learned from previous mistakes and is presenting the "Fantastic Four" in a worthy new chapter. The new blockbuster will be released in cinemas on July 25, 2025.
