The life of the French national heroine Joan of Arc has already been adapted for the big screen several times. The material still seems to be of interest to Hollywood, as Baz Luhrmann is now directing a new "Joan of Arc" film adaptation.

Luhrmann, who is primarily known for his extravagant style and visually stunning works "The Great Gatsby" and "Moulin Rouge!", is likely to be a particularly attractive choice to direct the "Jeanne d'Arc" film, according to Variety. However, it is not known which actress will play the titular role.

Jeanne d'Arc, who became world-famous as the youthful leader of the French troops in the Hundred Years' War against the English, led the army to victory in Orléans in 1429. Her courage and determination made her a legend, but her life took a tragic turn when she was condemned as a heretic and burned at the stake at the age of 19, just a few years after her triumphant success. A number of film adaptations have been released in recent years: for example in 1928 under the title "The Passion of Joan of Arc" or in 1999 under the direction of Luc Besson.

Baz Luhrmann's Career at a Glance

Baz Luhrmann, born on September 17, 1962 in Herons Creek, Australia, is a visionary filmmaker and theater director who has achieved worldwide fame for his stylistically striking and emotionally intense works. With his unique ability to stage classic stories in new, spectacular ways, he has made a decisive impact on modern cinema. From his early stage work to internationally acclaimed blockbusters, Luhrmann has developed an unmistakable style that has made him one of the most recognizable directors of his generation.

Early Career and Theater Work

Baz Luhrmann's career began in the 1980s when he studied acting in Sydney and dedicated himself to the world of theater. Early on, he showed an extraordinary flair for visual design and staging. While still a student, he staged several plays, including his own version of "La Bohème", which made him famous on the Australian theater scene. His work in the theater was the first step towards the opulent and extravagant style that would later become his trademark.

His breakthrough as a director, however, came with the production of the stage play "Strictly Ballroom" in 1984. The play told the story of an aspiring dancer who rebels against the rigid rules of society. It became a huge success and laid the foundation for Luhrmann's career in film.

International Fame with "Romeo + Juliet"

Baz Luhrmann's next major production was a modern adaptation of Shakespeare's "Romeo and Juliet", which was released in 1996 under the title "Romeo + Juliet". Starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes, the movie brought the classic play into the present day and told the famous tragedy in a modern, urban setting. Despite the contemporary staging, Luhrmann stuck to the original Shakespearean language, which lent the film a fascinating tension.

"Romeo + Juliet" was a huge success, especially with younger audiences, and established Luhrmann as one of the most innovative filmmakers of his time. The movie won several awards and turned Leonardo DiCaprio into a star.

The Oscar Success "Moulin Rouge"

The film that finally catapulted Luhrmann into the ranks of the most important directors was "Moulin Rouge!". The mixture of musical, drama and romance, which was released in 2001, was a tribute to the Parisian art scene of the late 19th century. Starring Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor, the film was visually stunning and told the tragic love story between a writer and a courtesan. "Moulin Rouge!" was nominated for eight Oscars and won two, including Best Production Design.

"The Great Gatsby" and Another Collaboration with Leonardo DiCaprio

Following the success of "Moulin Rouge!", Luhrmann turned his attention to another literary classic. In 2013, he released a lush film adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald's novel "The Great Gatsby", once again starring Leonardo DiCaprio. The movie took the liberty of mixing the era of the Roaring Twenties with modern elements and combined Fitzgerald's socially critical novel with an exuberant visual spectacle. The music in particular, which fused contemporary hip-hop sounds with jazz elements, was much discussed.

"The Great Gatsby" became a box office hit and won two Oscars, including for Best Costume Design and Best Production Design. Luhrmann once again proved his skills to interpret classic stories in a new and modern way.

"Elvis"

Baz Luhrmann's latest project is the biopic "Elvis", which was released in 2022 and tells the story of music icon Elvis Presley. The film, which shows a deeper, more emotional side of Elvis, was praised by critics and achieved both commercial and artistic success. The lead role was played by Austin Butler, who received much acclaim for his portrayal of Elvis.

Baz Luhrmann's innovative approach to storytelling and his visual style have earned him a permanent place in the film world. His works are not only opulent spectacles, but also emotional narratives that never fail to captivate audiences.
