The Flood: Jennifer Lawrence Cast in New Sci-Fi Film from Resident Evil Director Zach Cregger

This movie announcement has us excited for more: Jennifer Lawrence will star in the new film by "Resident Evil" director Zach Cregger! The project is titled "The Flood" and is described as a science fiction thriller. And the release date has already been set!

For "The Flood," Cregger is once again teaming up with Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema. Together, they brought the box office hit "Weapons" to the big screen as recently as 2025. Cregger will not only direct "The Flood" but also write the screenplay. The project is being produced by, among others, Steven Spielberg's production studio Amblin Entertainment.

Lawrence's casting has already been officially confirmed and once again demonstrates Cregger's growing standing in Hollywood. Cregger's own initial descriptions promise a true space horror thriller. In an interview with Deadline, Cregger explains how he came up with the idea for "The Flood":

"I was watching this movie, and somebody in the movie I was watching was entering an abandoned spaceship. And my wife was like, 'There's nothing scarier than being trapped in space.' And I was like, 'Oh, that's interesting. Maybe there's something here.' And then this character goes into the ship and they find something that was pretty weird and scared them. And I was thinking, 'What would be weirder and scarier than that? What could happen in this scenario that would freak me out more than this?' And it's never happened to me before, but in a flash, I had the whole movie explode in front of my eyes."

Cregger also revealed that "The Flood" will have an unusual narrative structure. The director did not go into further detail, however. So we can look forward to seeing what Cregger develops from this premise. It's also worth mentioning, however, that according to some rumors, the film's plot has been leaked. The website World of Reel reports the following details:

"The story follows a deep-space exploration team aboard the Spiritus Mundi, who pick up a strange, recurring signal from a remote planet. Captain Elena Voss leads the mission to investigate, only to discover a bizarre alien artifact that begins warping time, reality, and the crew's minds."

When will The Flood hit theaters?

However, this information has not been confirmed—so it should be taken with a grain of salt. What is already clear, though, is when "The Flood" will hit theaters. The release date has been announced as August 11, 2028. So we'll still have to be patient for a while. In the meantime, you can still catch Cregger's latest film, "Resident Evil," on the big screen.
