Three New Lego Live-Action Films to be Released
The films could take a kind of meta-approach
Released in 2014, "The Lego Movie" was not only a box office hit, but also proved very popular with fans and critics. In the years that followed, a number of Lego films were released, including the sequel "The Lego Movie 2". Now the universe is being expanded in a rather unusual way, as three new live-action movies are to be made.
This is reported by Deadline. We can only speculate about what exactly this will involve. It could of course be that – as in "Barbie" – a kind of meta approach is being pursued. In the first "The Lego Movie", main character Emmet arrived in our world through a wormhole. It seems conceivable that the upcoming Lego films could be set in a parallel universe.
One thing is certain, though: "Jumanji" director Jake Kasdan, "Wonder Woman" director Patty Jenkins and Joe Cornish, known for "Attack the Block", will each be directing one film. The projects are being produced by Jill Wilfert and Ryan Christians for the LEGO Group and by Matt Reilly and Jacqueline Garell from Universal Pictures. The previous Lego movies were released by Warner Bros.
In addition, a Lego-style biopic about Pharrell Williams entitled "Piece by Piece" was released in the United States on October 11 and will be released in the United Kingdom on November 8.
The Lego Films: A Look Back at the Colorful Universe
In recent years, the LEGO Group has managed to make a name for itself in the world of film. With a series of animated and soon also real films, the company has not only inspired children but also adults. The movies combine humor, adventure and a pinch of nostalgia and have become an integral part of modern pop culture.
The Beginning: The Lego Movie (2014)
The LEGO Group took its first big step into the world of cinema in 2014 with "The Lego Movie", which was directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller. The movie tells the story of Emmet Brickowski, an ordinary Lego man who is mistaken for the most extraordinary being in the universe. Emmet is caught up in a battle against the evil Lord Business, who threatens the world with his construction glue, by a group of rebels led by the brave Wyldstyle.
The film was a huge success, both at the box office and with critics. Earning over $468 million worldwide and an Oscar nomination for Best Animated Feature, "The Lego Movie" received high praise for its creativity, humor and moving message about individuality and cooperation. The song "Everything is Awesome" was particularly memorable, becoming a viral hit and perfectly capturing the movie's positive attitude towards life.
The Sequel: The Lego Movie 2 (2019)
Five years after the first part, the sequel "The Lego Movie 2" was released in cinemas. It was directed by Mike Mitchell and co-director Trisha Gum. In this story, the protagonists Emmet and Wyldstyle have to face a new threat scenario that comes from outer space. The movie picks up on the themes of the first part, but also addresses dealing with change and growing up.
Although the sequel did not achieve the same overwhelming success as the first film, it still managed to earn over 190 million dollars worldwide and win over the critics. The animation techniques remained innovative, and the film retained the unique humor and charm of the Lego world.
The Superhero Hit: The Lego Batman Movie (2017)
"The Lego Batman Movie", released in 2017 and directed by Chris McKay, was released alongside the two main films. The film takes the iconic character Batman on a humorous and self-deprecating journey. Here, Batman is portrayed as a lone superhero who teams up with his sidekick Robin and his adversary Barbara Gordon to stop the Joker and his evil plans.
"The Lego Batman Movie" is particularly noteworthy as it not only turns the Batman mythology on its head, but is also a declaration of love to the history of the Dark Knight. With over 312 million dollars in revenue, the film was another success for the Lego animated series and won many fans with its humor and clever references to other "Batman" films and series.
The Ninjago Universe: The Lego Ninjago Movie (2017)
Another notable project in the Lego film series is "The Lego Ninjago Movie", which was also released in 2017. This movie focuses on the characters from the popular Lego Ninjago game series and the cartoon format of the same name. Directed by Charlie Bean, the story revolves around young ninja Lloyd who must battle the evil warlord Garmadon, who also happens to be his father.
The movie combines action, humor and themes such as friendship and acceptance. With box office takings of over 123 million dollars, "The Lego Ninjago Movie" was not as successful as its predecessors, but offered a fresh perspective on the Lego universe and showed the variety of stories that can be created from the colorful bricks.
