Fans of the legendary horror film series "Friday the 13th" can look forward to an exciting new chapter: as Variety reports, Emmy-nominated actress Linda Cardellini will take on the lead role in the upcoming prequel series "Crystal Lake".

Specifically, she will take on the role of Pamela Voorhees, the mother of Jason Voorhees. Horror fans know that Pamela was the real antagonist in the original 1980 film, who carried out a series of murders at Camp Crystal Lake in revenge for the death of her son. Her son Jason, who later became famous as an iconic killer in a field hockey mask, drowned at the camp as a child, which drove his mother to her bloody campaign.

The "Crystal Lake" series was commissioned by Peacock back in 2022. In August 2024, Brad Caleb Kane – known for the action series "Warrior" – was hired as creator, screenwriter, showrunner and executive producer. Victor Miller, the screenwriter of the original film, will also remain on board as a producer.

The first "Friday the 13th" film was released in 1980 and became a box office hit with a budget of 550,000 US dollars. It grossed almost 40 million US dollars and established itself as a classic of the slasher genre. Since then, eleven more films have been produced, including "Jason X", "Freddy vs. Jason" and the 2009 reboot. While Jason Voorhees became the main antagonist from the second film onwards, "Crystal Lake" now takes on a new perspective and sheds light on the origins of the horror series from his mother's point of view.

Friday the 13th: A journey through the cult slasher series

The "Friday the 13th" film series is one of the most famous slasher franchises in horror history. Since the first film in 1980, the series has become synonymous with masked killers, brutal murders and iconic horror. The central character, Jason Voorhees, has evolved over the years from a tragic childhood fate to an unstoppable horror icon. Here is an overview of all the films in the series.

1. Friday the 13th (1980)

The first film tells the story of Camp Crystal Lake, a summer camp that is to be reopened after a tragic past. Years earlier, little Jason Voorhees drowned in the lake while the counselors weren't paying attention. Now a group of counselors are murdered in a gruesome manner. In the end, it turns out that Jason's mother, Pamela Voorhees, is behind the murders as she wants to avenge her son's death. The last survivor, Alice, is finally able to kill Pamela, but in a shocking scene at the end of the movie, Jason himself – or a nightmare of him – jumps out of the water.

2. Friday the 13th Part 2 (1981)

The story picks up five years after the events of the first part. Alice is murdered right at the beginning. Jason, who now appears as an adult killer, lives in the forest around Crystal Lake and begins to terrorize a new group of young people. Still without his familiar field hockey mask, he wears a sack mask over his head. The main character, Ginny, survives in the end by pretending to be Jason's mother to confuse him before attacking him.

3. Friday the 13th Part 3 (1982)

Jason continues his murders and encounters a new group of teenagers. In this movie, he gets his famous field hockey mask after he kills one of the characters who was wearing it as a joke mask. With this new, iconic appearance, Jason finally becomes one of the most recognizable characters in horror film. The movie uses the 3D format for the first time to enhance the shock effects.

4. Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter (1984)

This installment was originally supposed to be the end of the series. Jason is seemingly killed for good when young Tommy Jarvis seriously wounds him with a machete. Tommy, who knows his way around horror films and masks, is a clever opponent for Jason. The movie is considered one of the best in the series.

5. Friday the 13th: A New Beginning (1985)

Tommy Jarvis is now a young adult living in a therapy facility for traumatized teenagers. When new murders occur, Jason seems to have returned. But in the end, it turns out that the killer is a copycat – a man named Roy Burns who wanted revenge for the death of his son. The film was criticized by many fans for the absence of the real Jason.

6. Friday the 13th Part 6: Jason Lives (1986)

Tommy Jarvis returns to destroy Jason's body. But due to an accident, Jason is revived by a lightning strike – now as a supernatural, unstoppable killer. The film focuses on more action and black humor, making it one of the most popular parts of the series.

7. Friday the 13th Part 7: The New Blood (1988)

In this installment, Jason meets Tina, a girl with telekinetic abilities. The movie brings a new twist to the series by incorporating the supernatural more strongly. The duel between Tina and Jason makes for spectacular effects and creative kills.

8. Friday the 13th Part 8: Jason Takes Manhattan (1989)

Jason leaves Camp Crystal Lake for the first time when he lands on a cruise ship bound for New York. There he continues his killing spree. Although the movie gives the impression that Jason spends a lot of time in Manhattan, most of the action happens on the ship. Nevertheless, there are some iconic scenes, including Jason's foray through Times Square.

9. Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday (1993)

Jason is literally shot to pieces by a special unit at the beginning of the movie. But his evil spirit survives and jumps from body to body to finally manifest itself again in its familiar form. The movie introduces new elements, including the concept that Jason is a demonic creature that can be stopped by certain bloodlines.

10. Jason X (2001)

In the year 2455, Jason is awakened from cryogenic sleep and lands on a spaceship. There he begins to kill again, but a futuristic technology eventually transforms him into an even more dangerous version of himself – "Uber-Jason". The film mixes sci-fi elements with slasher horror and is often seen as an absurd but entertaining sequel.

11. Freddy vs. Jason (2003)

The crossover between the two horror icons Freddy Krueger and Jason Voorhees shows how Freddy manipulates Jason in order to spread fear. But when Jason can no longer be controlled, a brutal fight ensues between the two. The movie is a feast for horror fans and contains some of the best fight scenes in the franchise.

12. Friday the 13th (2009)

The reboot combines elements of the first four films and modernizes them. Jason is smarter, faster and more tactical here. He lives in an underground lair and hunts a group of teenagers traveling to Crystal Lake. The film offers a dark and brutal reinterpretation of the legend of Jason Voorhees.

Conclusion

"Friday the 13th" has established itself as one of the most successful horror franchises over the decades. Jason Voorhees remains one of the best-known and most feared characters in the genre. Despite ups and downs, the series is an integral part of horror culture and will probably live on for a long time to come.
