The fantasy franchise is far from over!

After Amazon Prime Video canceled the series "The Wheel of Time" after the third season last year, there was initially great uncertainty among fans as to what would happen next with the fantasy franchise. Now there is good news: As Variety magazine reports, a number of new film and series projects are planned.

The rights holders iwot Studios have brought an absolute expert on board for this ambitious project. Thomas Vu, who played a key role in the success of the game "League of Legends" and was the producer of the acclaimed animation series "Arcane", will take over the creative direction. In terms of content, the new productions will go their own way and will not follow on from the events of the Amazon series. The aim is apparently to reinterpret and expand author Robert Jordan's cosmos independently of the previous live-action adaptation.

In addition, announced "The Wheel of Time" films such as "The White Tower" and the prequel "The Age of Legends", directed by Kari Skogland, are still in the works. However, it will probably be quite some time before the new "The Wheel of Time" projects are finally presented to us.

Series tips for all fans of The Wheel of Time

Epic fantasy series such as "The Wheel of Time" inspire with their detailed worlds, complex characters and the interplay of magic, fate and power. Viewers are immersed in universes in which prophecies guide events and seemingly ordinary characters become crucial heroes. Anyone who loves this mixture will now find many series that offer similar strengths – albeit with their own accents.

Dark and multi-layered: The Witcher

One of the best-known series in the modern fantasy genre is "The Witcher". At its center is the monster hunter Geralt von Riva, who moves through a dangerous world full of creatures and moral gray areas. Unlike classic heroic figures, Geralt is not a shining savior, but a complex character who is often caught between different loyalties.

The narrative structure is particularly exciting: several storylines run in parallel and later intertwine. This narrative depth is strongly reminiscent of the storytelling in "The Wheel of Time", where many perspectives are also interwoven.

Intrigue and power games: Game of Thrones

Anyone who focuses on political suspense cannot ignore "Game of Thrones". The series has revolutionized the genre and shown just how complex fantasy on television can be. Intrigue, betrayal and shifting alliances dominate the action. Even if magic is used more subtly here, an increasingly mystical level develops over the course of the series. Fans of multi-layered characters and unexpected twists and turns will be particularly entertained here.

Magic and the chosen ones: Shadow and Bone

"Shadow and Bone" combines classic fantasy elements with a fresh world idea. A dark shadow zone divides the land, and only a few have the power to control it. The protagonist discovers abilities that place her at the center of a major conflict. The motif of the "Chosen One" and the connection between personal fate and the fate of the world are strongly reminiscent of "The Wheel of Time". At the same time, a group of outsiders provides additional dynamism and humor.

Philosophical fantasy: His Dark Materials

With "His Dark Materials", the genre takes on a more profound note. The series is based on the book series by Philip Pullman and tells the story of young Lyra, who is drawn into a conspiracy of cosmic proportions. The focus here is less on battles and more on big questions: What is freedom? Is there a predetermined destiny? These philosophical elements make the series particularly interesting for viewers who are looking for more than just action.

Historical and mythical: Vikings

Although "Vikings" is not a classic fantasy series, it does contain many mythological elements. The story of Ragnar Lothbrok and his family combines historical events with Norse mythology. Visions, belief in the gods and ideas of fate play a major role – similar to the spiritual aspects in "The Wheel of Time". At the same time, the series impresses with intense character developments and impressive battles.

Epic worlds: The Rings of Power

With "The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power", viewers return to Middle-earth. The series tells of a time long before the well-known events of "The Lord of the Rings" and shows the rise of dark powers. The visual realization is impressive, and the multitude of characters and locations is strongly reminiscent of the epic breadth of "The Wheel of Time". Major themes such as power, corruption and hope take center stage here.

Dark and original: Carnival Row

A somewhat more unusual but very exciting series is "Carnival Row". In a Victorian-inspired world, magical creatures live among humans – but not on an equal footing. The series combines fantasy with socio-critical themes such as discrimination and migration. The dark atmosphere and complex plot make it an interesting alternative for anyone looking for new perspectives in the genre.

Conclusion: diversity in the fantasy genre

The fantasy genre has developed enormously in recent years. Series such as "The Wheel of Time" have shown that lavishly produced stories with deep characters and epic story arcs can inspire a large audience.

Whether dark monster worlds, political intrigue or philosophical adventures – the choice is greater than ever. Once you immerse yourself in these worlds, you will quickly realize that each series has its own magic, even if they all live from the same basic elements: Magic, fate and the eternal battle between light and darkness.
