The highly anticipated "Supergirl" film from James Gunn's DCU continues to make progress, as Matthias Schoenaerts has been cast as the antagonist for "Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow".

Schoenaerts has already appeared in a number of film and series projects, including "The Old Guard" alongside Charlize Theron and the HBO series "The Regime".

According to Deadline, Schoenaerts will play a significant role in the upcoming "Supergirl" film, but more details are still unknown. At the moment, everything points to the ruthless villain Krem of the Yellow Hills, who already made Supergirl having a hard time in the comic series of the same name. In the original, Krem killed the father of Ruthye, an alien girl who later meets Kara Zor-El alias Supergirl. Kara and Ruthye eventually team up to go on a dangerous journey through space together, facing off against Krem and other threats.

James Gunn, one of the creative minds behind the DCU's new direction, has already described the Craig Gillespie-directed film as a "big sci-fi epic". The superheroine will be played by "House of the Dragon" star Milly Alcock. It is currently assumed that Supergirl will make her first appearance in "Superman", which is still scheduled for July 11, 2025. Her own movie could then be released on the big screen in 2026 or 2027.

The career of Matthias Schoenaerts

Matthias Schoenaerts, born on December 8, 1977 in Antwerp, Belgium, is one of the most prominent and versatile actors in Europe. He has made a name for himself in both French and international productions and is considered an outstanding talent characterized by his intense performance and physical acting. With a career ranging from sophisticated dramas to major international blockbusters, he has carved out a place for himself on the international film scene.

Early years and entry into acting

Schoenaerts was born into an artistic family: his father, Julien Schoenaerts, was a well-known Flemish actor known for his stage work and feature films. Matthias Schoenaerts' early interest in acting was strongly influenced by his father's work. He made his debut at the age of 15 in the film "Daens" (1992) , which was nominated for an Oscar for Best Foreign Film. This early experience laid the foundation for his future career, even if it took him a few years to establish himself as a sought-after actor.

After his first role in "Daens", Schoenaerts opted for formal training and studied at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts in Antwerp. After graduating, he appeared in plays and acted in various Belgian productions, but it took him a while to gain international recognition.

Breakthrough with "Bullhead" (2011)

The decisive turning point in Schoenaerts' career came with the film "Bullhead" (2011), a dark drama by director Michaël R. Roskam. In "Bullhead", Schoenaerts played the role of Jacky Vanmarsenille, a farmer and hormone dealer who is entangled in the underworld of the Belgian cattle industry. For this role, Schoenaerts gained over 27 kilograms of muscle mass and delivered a remarkable portrayal of a broken man haunted by his past and his inner turmoil.

The film was acclaimed worldwide and nominated for an Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film, bringing Schoenaerts' talent to the attention of a wider audience. His physically intense performance and ability to convey the emotional complexity of his characters impressed both critics and viewers.

International career and collaboration with major directors

After "Bullhead", Schoenaerts received more and more offers for international productions. His first major success outside Belgium was his role in "Rust and Bone" (2012), a French drama by Jacques Audiard. Alongside Marion Cotillard, Schoenaerts played a man who falls in love with a woman who loses her legs after an accident. His performance was highly praised by critics and the film was another milestone in his career.

In 2014, Schoenaerts once again starred alongside Tom Hardy in "The Drop", a crime thriller by Michaël R. Roskam. The film marked Schoenaerts' entry into the American market and once again showed his versatility as an actor.

A year later, he appeared in "Far from the Madding Crowd" (2015), a film adaptation of Thomas Hardy's novel, in which he played a quiet, determined sheep farmer. This film cemented his reputation as a talented performer of strong but vulnerable characters in historical dramas.

European productions

In addition to his international roles, Schoenaerts remains loyal to the European film scene. In 2015, he starred in "A Bigger Splash" by Luca Guadagnino, where he was seen alongside Tilda Swinton and Ralph Fiennes. The film was praised for its psychologically charged performances, and Schoenaerts impressed with his intense, quiet portrayal.

Current projects and upcoming films

In 2022, Schoenaerts starred in "Amsterdam", a star-studded mystery drama by David O. Russell, and in "The Old Guard 2" (2024) , a Netflix action film with CharlizeTheron. He also took on the lead role in "Riviera", a series that shows him as a multi-layered character in a drama about art, intrigue and crime.

Matthias Schoenaerts' career is a prime example of the rise of a European talent who bridges the gap between arthouse and mainstream cinema. His intense, emotional performances, combined with his physical presence, have made him one of the most sought-after actors of his generation
