By Jonas Reichel on

Jason Bourne is back! Eight years after "Jason Bourne", the sixth film in the hugely popular action series about the titular CIA agent is now in development. The title has now been announced!

It is called "The Bourne Dilemma". Production Weekly also reports that the new film will be directed and written by a German director: We're talking about Edward Berger, who made German cinema history in 2022 with his Oscar-winning war drama "All Quiet on the Western Front".

Even though the official cast of "The Bourne Dilemma" has not yet been confirmed, there are strong indications that Matt Damon will once again take on the role of Jason Bourne. Damon, who has played the character since the first film in 2002, expressed his interest in returning in an interview on "The Late Show". He expressed his enthusiasm for Edward Berger and his work on "All Quiet on the Western Front". Damon praised the director and emphasized how much he would like to work with him on another "Bourne" film.

Although there are no details about the plot yet, it is assumed that part 6 will once again focus on Bourne's identity crisis and his search for the truth. In the previous films, Jason Bourne had to take on a variety of enemies, from corrupt CIA agents to powerful government officials. It remains to be seen what new threats and challenges he will face in this sixth installment. We are excited.

All "Bourne" films at a glance

The "Bourne" film series is one of the most influential and successful action franchises of recent decades. With a combination of gripping action, intense chases and realistic fight scenes, it has redefined the spy thriller genre. Based on the novels by Robert Ludlum, the saga revolves around Jason Bourne, who, after being brainwashed and losing his memory, tries to discover his true identity while fighting for survival as a hunted ex-agent. Over the years, the series has evolved and now comprises five films, with a sixth installment in the pipeline.

1. The Bourne Identity (2002)

The first film in the series, "The Bourne Identity", was released in 2002 and marked the beginning of a new trend in action cinema. Matt Damon plays Jason Bourne, a man who is rescued in the Mediterranean with no memory of his past. When he begins to find out his true identity, he discovers that he is a highly skilled contract killer who has been trained as part of a secret CIA program called "Treadstone". But Bourne no longer wants to be a killer – he wants to find peace.

Directed by Doug Liman, The Bourne Identity focused on realistic action and dispensed with the exaggerated effects that were common in many action films of the time. The car chases, especially those through the streets of Paris, and the hand-to-hand combat gave the film an intense and authentic style that was well received by critics and viewers alike. The movie was a huge success and laid the foundation for future sequels.

2. The Bourne Supremacy (2004)

Two years later, "The Bourne Supremacy" was released in cinemas, this time directed by Paul Greengrass. The movie directly follows on from the events of the first part. Jason Bourne lives in Europe, hides from the CIA and tries to lead a normal life. But when he becomes embroiled in a conspiracy and his girlfriend Marie is killed, Bourne is forced back into action.

The Bourne Conspiracy continued the intense style of the first film, but upped the action and added an even more complex plot. Particularly noticeable is the shaky handheld camera introduced by Greengrass, which made the movie look more dynamic and hectic. This visual style became a trademark of the series and was to be further perfected in the films to come.

3. The Bourne Ultimatum (2007)

The Bourne series reached its climax with "The Bourne Ultimatum". The film is considered one of the best action films of all time and won three Oscars, including for Best Editing and Best Sound. In this installment, Jason Bourne is determined to uncover the truth about his past and the dark machinations behind the Treadstone program.

The Bourne Ultimatum builds on the previous films by combining a high-tension plot with breathtaking action. From car chases across the rooftops of Tangier to intense battles in confined spaces. The film's finale, in which Bourne finally discovers his true identity and brings those responsible for the brainwashing to justice, is a satisfying conclusion to the trilogy. But the franchise was far from over.

4. The Bourne Legacy (2012)

After the end of the original trilogy, the franchise ventured into new territory in 2012 with "The Bourne Legacy". Matt Damon did not return as Jason Bourne, and instead Jeremy Renner took on the lead role as Aaron Cross, another agent trained under a similar program to Treadstone.

The film, directed by Tony Gilroy, tells the story of a new protagonist who goes on the run after the program is shut down while searching for a means to maintain his physical and mental superiority. While the film attempted to expand the Bourne universe, it failed to garner the same success and buzz as the original films. The Bourne Legacy, while financially successful, was considered by critics to be a weaker installment in the franchise, lacking the emotional depth and gripping suspense of the Matt Damon films.

5. Jason Bourne (2016)

In 2016, Matt Damon returned with "Jason Bourne". The fifth installment of the franchise follows on directly from the events of the original trilogy. Jason Bourne is still on the run when new information about his past comes to light. He is once again targeted by the CIA and has to defend himself against another plot.

Paul Greengrass took over as director again, and the movie offered many of the familiar elements: chases, conspiracies and Bourne's tireless search for the truth. Although Jason Bourne was welcomed by many fans, the reaction from critics was mixed. Some felt that the movie added little new to the series, while others praised the return of Damon and the gripping action.
