The cast of the new "Miami Vice" movie continues to grow: Michael B. Jordan and Austin Butler have already been cast as the leads in the reboot. The two will portray the iconic cop duo Rico Tubbs and Sonny Crockett. Now, another actor has apparently been cast: As reported by the industry magazine Deadline, Han Solo actor Alden Ehrenreich will appear in "Miami Vice '85."
The website did not provide any details about his role. Since the two main characters have been cast, Ehrenreich could conceivably play the antagonist. Recently, however, there have also been rumors about superstar Tom Cruise, who, according to an insider, could appear as the antagonist. So far, however, this speculation has not been confirmed.
What is Miami Vice '85 about?
As the title suggests, "Miami Vice '85" takes us back to the '80s! The reboot is said to be based on the pilot and the first season of the original series. The story focuses on the corruption and glamour of 1980s Miami.
Behind the production is "F1" director Joseph Kosinski. With "Top Gun: Maverick," Kosinski has already proven that he can bring a classic from the '80s into the modern era. The script was written by "Nightcrawler" director Dan Gilroy, who won an Emmy Award for his work as a writer on the "Star Wars" series "Andor."
The Release Date for Miami Vice '85
Filming on "Miami Vice '85" is expected to begin in 2026. However, audiences will have to be patient for the theatrical release. The reboot was originally scheduled to arrive in summer 2027, but the film was recently pushed back considerably. It is now set to hit theaters on May 19, 2028.
Alden Ehrenreich
Alden Ehrenreich is best known for his role as the young Han Solo in "Solo: A Star Wars Story." However, the actor had already made his breakthrough earlier in the Coen brothers' "Hail, Caesar!" Ehrenreich also appeared in supporting roles in Woody Allen's "Blue Jasmine" and Park Chan-wook's "Stoker."
In 2023, the actor starred in "Cocaine Bear" and the thriller "Fair Play." He also took on a smaller role in Christopher Nolan's "Oppenheimer." Most recently, Ehrenreich appeared in the horror film "Weapons." The actor has also enjoyed great success on stage. He won a Tony Award for his role in the play "Becky Shaw."

The cult series Miami Vice from the 80s
"Miami Vice" is one of the most influential series of the 80s. Developed by Anthony Yerkovich, the crime series premiered in 1984 and follows undercover cops James "Sonny" Crockett and Ricardo "Rico" Tubbs as they investigate drug trafficking, corruption, and organized crime in Miami.
In addition to the plot, the series' unmistakable look became its trademark: pastel colors, fast sports cars, designer clothes, and a soundtrack featuring numerous pop and rock hits turned "Miami Vice" into a pop-cultural phenomenon. Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas starred in the lead roles.
The Film Adaptation by Michael Mann
In 2006, "Heat" director Michael Mann brought "Miami Vice" to the big screen. Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx took on the roles of Sonny Crockett and Rico Tubbs, once again investigating undercover in Miami's drug underworld.
Unlike a classic remake, the film is less of a direct retelling of the series and more of a modern, darker interpretation of its characters and central concept. Mann, who was himself involved in the original series as a producer, opted for a realistic and gritty style. The film fell short of expectations at the box office but has since become a cult classic for many fans over the years.
