Robin Hood is returning to the big screen! A new project titled "The Lie of Sherwood Forest" is in the works; according to Variety, it aims to tell the familiar story of the legendary avenger from a much more down-to-earth and darker perspective. Thomasin McKenzie, "Peaky Blinders" actor Finn Cole, and "The Boys" star Antony Starr have been cast in the lead roles. Rounding out the cast are Smylie Bradwell, Brian Vernel, and Richard Durden, known for his role in "Star Wars: Episode 9".

The screenplay is by Harris Kauffman and is based on a story he developed together with Patrick Vollrath and Joachim Hedén. In terms of content, the film is said to differ significantly from previous Robin Hood adaptations. Instead of a classic adventure tale, audiences can apparently expect a gritty struggle for survival in which loyalty, justice, and personal motives play a central role. The filmmakers promise an unconventional reinterpretation of the familiar story. Dave Bishop, CEO of Protagonist Pictures, described the project as a radical retelling of one of the world's most famous legends.

Here's what The Lie of Sherwood Forest is about

At the heart of "The Lie of Sherwood Forest" are Robin Hood and his companions, who are led into a precarious situation by a young woman. Through deception, she convinces the outlaws to help her on a risky mission: to free her imprisoned brother. What initially appears to be a daring rescue attempt, however, quickly escalates into an uncontrollable raid.

As the situation escalates, the relationships within the group also begin to fray. Hidden motives come to light, and the outlaws must face the consequences of their decisions. It is not yet known when "The Lie of Sherwood Forest", directed by Patrick Vollrath, is set to hit theaters. With filming set to begin soon, however, this reimagining of the Robin Hood story should take on a more concrete form before long.

Robin Hood: A Legend That Hollywood Tells Again and Again

The story of the famous outlaw from Sherwood Forest is one of the best-known tales in film history. For decades, Robin Hood has served as the inspiration for numerous film and television productions, with each generation producing its own version of the folk hero. Among the best-known adaptations is Disney's animated classic "Robin Hood" from 1973, in which the characters are depicted as animals and the title hero, a cunning fox, battles the greedy Prince John.

Kevin Costner also left a lasting mark on the character's image: In the 1991 film "Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves", he portrayed a significantly more action-oriented hero who, together with Little John and his companions, takes on the Sheriff of Nottingham. At his side was Morgan Freeman as Azeem, while Alan Rickman, as the Sheriff, provided one of the most memorable antagonists in the film series.

Another well-known interpretation followed in 2010 with Ridley Scott's "Robin Hood". In it, Russell Crowe took on the lead role and told the backstory of the legendary archer. Instead of focusing exclusively on the battle against the Sheriff, the film placed greater emphasis on the political power dynamics in medieval England. In 2018, director Otto Bathurst attempted a more modern take with "Robin Hood". Taron Egerton played a young Robin, while Jamie Foxx fought alongside him as Little John. This reimagining relied on fast-paced action, elaborate fight sequences, and a much more contemporary production style, but it failed to match the success of earlier film adaptations. Most recently, "The Death of Robin Hood" was releasedan – extremely brutal take on the story starring Hugh Jackman as Robin Hood.
