There will be another "Warhammer 40,000" adaptation. In addition to the planned live-action series starring Henry Cavill, an animated series is now also in the works, according to Variety. What makes this project special is that it is based on an episode of "Secret Level."

This is an anthology series that premiered on Prime Video in December 2024. Over the course of 15 episodes, it tells various stories, each set in a different game world. The "Warhammer 40,000" episode now serves as the basis for the planned series. Dave Wilson directed the "Secret Level" episode in question. He is now also directing the spin-off. As a co-creator, he is also responsible for developing the series alongside John Orloff.

Secret Level as a launchpad

Henry Cavill is on board as an executive producer. Other executive producers include Dave Wilson, Natalie Viscuso, Roy Lee, Andy Smillie, and "Secret Level" creator Tim Miller. Amazon MGM Studios, Blur Studios, and Games Workshop are behind the development of the animated series.

"Warhammer 40,000" is originally a tabletop game by Games Workshop. The story is set in a distant, dystopian future where conflict erupts between humanity, aliens, and supernatural creatures. Details about the animated series' storyline are being kept under wraps. However, it is said to feature "The Deathwatch," an elite unit of Space Marines that combats alien threats. For director Dave Wilson, "Secret Level" is "a launchpad for larger stories." He is quoted in Variety as saying:

"The response to the 'Warhammer' episode was extraordinary, particularly from fans who understood how much care went into getting the world right. This series gives us the opportunity to build on that foundation and tell a much larger story."

A live-action series starring Henry Cavill is also in the works

For fans of "Warhammer 40,000," a golden age may be on the horizon. In addition to the animated project, a live-action series starring Henry Cavill is also in the works. The plot has not yet been revealed, and Cavill's role remains to be seen. However, Mike Flanagan has recently been mentioned as a potential showrunner, director, and screenwriter. The filmmaker is particularly well-versed in the horror genre, as he has demonstrated with, among other things, his Stephen King adaptation "Doctor Sleep" and his horror series "The Haunting of Hill House" and "Midnight Mass." His new Stephen King adaptation "Carrie" premieres on Prime Video on October 7, 2026.

As for Henry Cavill, "Warhammer 40,000" is a labor of love. He told Esquire magazine last year that bringing this world to life would be "a dream come true" for him. In any case, he's frequently seen in fantasy projects. Many people surely still remember him as Superman from the DC films directed by Zack Snyder. He also starred in the fantasy series "The Witcher." And in the upcoming remake of the fantasy film "Highlander," he will also play the lead role.
