The love story of Alex and Henry continues: Amazon has officially greenlit a sequel to the successful film "Red, White & Royal Blue"! A title was announced at the same time: Part 2 is called "Red, White & Royal Wedding". Amazon also published a short clip on social media that gives the first clues about the plot of the sequel. The streaming service shared the following words:

"Did someone say something about a wedding?"

Logically, the two main actors Nicholas Galitzine as Prince Henry and Taylor Zakhar Perez as Alex Claremont-Diaz are once again part of the cast. Jamie Babbit is the director this time. She follows in the footsteps of Matthew López, who is still involved as screenwriter. He will be supported by Gemma Burgess and Casey McQuiston. McQuiston is known to be the author of the original novel. This time, there is no novel on which the film is based. McQuiston has already commented on the sequel:

"Working with this team to bring 'Red, White & Royal Blue' to life has been a dream come true, and I hope readers and watchers alike will love how the story continues in the sequel."

It is not yet known when the sequel will be released on Amazon Prime Video.

The success of Red, White & Royal Blue

The Amazon film "Red, White & Royal Blue" was a real success when it was released in 2023. The queer romantic comedy tells the story of an unlikely but passionate love affair between the son of the US president and a British prince. The film quickly found a wide audience and was streamed in numerous households around the globe.

The novel by Casey McQuiston

The novel was published in 2019 and was Casey McQuiston's debut. In it, the author tells the story of an alternative reality in which the USA has a female president and her son Alex Claremont-Diaz is at the center of a media spectacle: After a diplomatic faux pas at a royal wedding, he has to fake a media-effective friendship with the British Prince Henry. What begins as a PR stunt soon develops into a deep romantic relationship. McQuiston succeeds in linking political themes such as election campaigns, media presence and international relations with queer identity, coming out and emotional self-discovery.

The film adaptation

With Taylor Zakhar Perez as Alex and Nicholas Galitzine as Henry, the cast succeeds in bringing the central couple to life. The film largely follows the original novel: after an embarrassing incident at a wedding, Alex and Henry find themselves in the media spotlight and have to stage their relationship. The staging soon turns into reality, which has not only personal but also political consequences.

The tone of the film is light-hearted and romantic, with a classic "enemies to lovers" motif, glamorous setting and emotional warmth. Although some aspects of the novel's plot have been simplified or omitted, the spirit of the original remains intact: It's about love, the courage to tell the truth and the hope that a queer relationship doesn't have to take place in secret. The production quickly achieved high streaming figures – in several countries, the film was one of the most-watched titles on Amazon Prime shortly after its release.

Cultural impact

What's important: queer characters are allowed to be at the center of a big, crowd-pleasing love story. This particularly affects young viewers, who can see themselves in the characters and at the same time see a positive future perspective for queer relationships. Critically, the film remained rather superficial for some viewers: it does not tell a realistic story about queer life under pressure, but rather an idealized fantasy.

At the same time, the success of the film is a signal to the industry: queer stories also work on a global stage. The broad fan base, discussions on social media and the cultural impact of the film indicate that formats like this are more than just niche products. The fact that the film reaches so many people shows how great the need for such stories is.
