Hans calls his girlfriend "Heinz"—which pretty much says it all about their relationship. They're a perfectly normal couple whose love has grown stale. Eight years, to be exact. Hans works at a copy shop, and Heinz—who's actually an actress—has been reduced to voicing a cartoon traffic light. They spend their evenings in cozy togetherness, eating chips and playing video games in sweatpants on the sofa. In short: their relationship has lost that certain something. They don't realize this, however, until they go to the movies on their anniversary to see a romantic film. But the romantic mood on the screen just doesn't seem to rub off on them. When Hans even willingly gives Heinz's ex-boyfriend her number instead of throwing a jealous fit, all the alarm bells go off in Heinz's head: This can't be real love! Pragmatic as they are, the two make a list of all the "things" that belong in a movie-worthy romance: romance, longing, passion, jealousy, and drama—the big emotions, in other words. Highly motivated, Hans and Heinz begin working through this list and realize: In real life, nothing is like in the movies!
