Ink by Danny Boyle: Release date & first photo of Guy Pearce as Rupert Murdoch revealed
The film tells the story of the Sun's meteoric rise
Danny Boyle has made a name for himself with films spanning a wide range of genres. With his new drama "Ink," the director once again demonstrates his versatility. However, we'll have to wait a few months before we can see the film. As Variety reports, "Ink" will be shown in select theaters starting December 11. On January 8, Boyle's film will be released on Netflix in the U.S. and Latin America. But first, "Ink" will open this year's Venice Film Festival, where the drama will celebrate its world premiere on September 2.
As a little preview, the first still from "Ink" has now been unveiled. The photo shows Guy Pearce as media mogul Rupert Murdoch and Jack O'Connell as editor Larry Lamb. The two are at the center of a film based on true events. It tells the story of the meteoric rise of The Sun, which was transformed from a traditional daily newspaper into Britain's most controversial tabloid. In a press release, "Ink" is described as follows:
"A cinematic roller-coaster ride about a radical reorientation that crossed all journalistic boundaries in favor of scandals and entertainment, thereby changing the public's view of the world we live in today."
The lead actors of Ink
Guy Pearce is known for his roles in the thriller "Memento" and the drama "The Brutalist," among others. He will soon be seen in the post-apocalyptic science fiction film "The Dog Stars." Jack O'Connell has garnered attention for his roles in the Amy Winehouse biopic "Back to Black" and the apocalyptic thriller "28 Years Later," among others. Danny Boyle also directed "28 Years Later." O'Connell is also set to star in the upcoming monster blockbuster "Godzilla x Kong: Supernova."
In addition to Pearce and O'Connell, "The Crown" star Claire Foy is also part of the cast of "Ink." The screenplay was written by James Graham, who adapted his own 2017 play of the same name. In addition to directing, Danny Boyle is also serving as a producer alongside Tessa Ross, Michael Ellenberg, and Tracey Seaward.
One director, many genres
It will be interesting to see what Danny Boyle does with this material. In any case, "Ink" isn't the director's first film dedicated to a successful real-life figure. In 2015, he directed "Steve Jobs," a drama about the eponymous Apple co-founder. Otherwise, Boyle's filmography stands out above all for its versatility.
Throughout his career, the director has explored a wide variety of genres. In 1996, he made a name for himself with his tragicomedy "Trainspotting," which he followed up with a sequel in 2017. In 2002, he impressed audiences with the post-apocalyptic horror film "28 Days Later." In 2007, the science fiction film "Sunshine" was released, followed by the survival drama "127 Hours" in 2010 and the romantic comedy "Yesterday" in 2019. For a time, Boyle was also slated to direct a James Bond film. However, creative differences reportedly arose, leading him to ultimately step down from the project. It's a shame, really: Many people would surely have loved to see what this jack-of-all-trades would have done with the famous 007 agent.
