Bad news for all fans of the Dark Knight: The release date for "The Batman 2" has been pushed back yet again. However, the first teaser for the DC sequel offers a glimpse of Robert Pattinson! Although it's just a short clip, it does at least offer a sneak peek at the redesigned Batsuit.

Director Matt Reeves announced via Vimeo that the U.S. theatrical release is now scheduled for February 18, 2028. This means there will be nearly six years between the first film, which premiered in March 2022, and its sequel.

We can look forward to seeing many familiar faces in the cast. Alongside Robert Pattinson as Bruce Wayne, Jeffrey Wright returns as James Gordon, Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth, and Colin Farrell in the role of the Penguin, aka Oswald "Oz" Cobb. In an interview with ScreenRant, Farrell spoke enthusiastically about the sequel's screenplay:

"I got to read from the first to last page and it's really magnificent. I just think Matt Reeves is brilliant and he wrote, not only tonally, a really kind of dark and at times terrifying piece, and not only psychologically weighty and nuanced, but really feeling. [...] I just think he wrote kind of a contemporary genre masterpiece, really."

Until now, it was unclear how significant his role would be in the sequel directed and written by Matt Reeves. But now Farrell has spoken out – and revealed that we won't be seeing him in the film for very long.

In addition, the cast is being expanded to include several prominent names. New additions include Scarlett Johansson, Sebastian Stan, "Game of Thrones" star Charles Dance, Brian Tyree Henry, and German actor Sebastian Koch. Barry Keoghan is also expected to reprise his role as the Joker.

"The Batman 2" is set to focus more on the character of Bruce Wayne

Director Matt Reeves' sequel has been in the works for quite some time. "The Batman 2" was first announced four years ago. After several delays, it was finally announced last June that the screenplay by Reeves and Mattson Tomlin had been completed. Nevertheless, the question remains: What will the new "Batman" movie starring Robert Pattinson be about? It's impossible to say at this point. So far, Reeves has stated that the sequel will focus more on the character of Bruce Wayne.

No further details have been revealed. We're also still waiting for the first official trailer for "The Batman 2", which could shed some light on the matter. At least Reeves recently treated us to a little sneak peek. The director posted the first images from the production on social media. Under the hashtag #SnowTires, he shared two photos of the Batmobile on the move while it appears to be snowing.

The photos don't give us much more insight. As we've already reported, however, the wintry setting could hint at a different sequel to "Batman". With "Batman Returns", director Tim Burton once continued his first "Batman" film adaptation from 1989. Starring Michael Keaton as Batman, Michelle Pfeiffer as Catwoman, and Danny DeVito as the Penguin, the sequel boasted a star-studded cast.

Now, "The Batman 2" is set to premiere in theaters in 2028 – 36 years after "Batman Returns". Thus, a snow-covered Gotham could be a lovely tribute to the 36th anniversary of Burton's classic. In any case, expectations are sky-high – both in terms of content and financially. After all, "The Batman" was a resounding success – with critics and at the box office. Matt Reeves' first "Batman" film grossed $772 million worldwide. It remains to be seen whether the DC Elseworlds sequel can build on this success. For many fans, the highly anticipated sequel is already one of the highlights of the coming years. We, too, are very excited and will, of course, keep you updated!
