New details about the second "Super Mario" movie! We get our first look at the design of fan favorite Yoshi. There are also the first clues about the antagonists. Two iconic characters from the "Mario" games could appear in the movie adaptation.

The first glimpse of Yoshi comes in a rather curious way: "The Super Mario Galaxy Movie" is advertised on the packaging of a baking mix from the US company Pillsbury. Both Mario and Yoshi can be seen on it. However, the character's appearance in the sequel comes as little surprise. Yoshi was already teased in the post-credit scene of "The Super Mario Bros. Movie".

First clues about new characters?

An Instagram post from the Mexican cinema chain Cinépolis is also exciting. It shares the first trailer for the film with the following words:

"New threats, old rivalries and a battle that reaches for the stars. Mario, Luigi, Peach and Yoshi join forces against Wario and Bowser Jr."

So has this revealed two new villains for the sequel? The appearance of Wario and Bowser Jr. has not yet been officially confirmed. But it at least seems logical that other iconic characters from the games will find their way onto the big screen. Insiders recently reported that some characters could also be given a solo film – and that an entire Cinematic Universe is to be created! You can find all the information here.

We already know for sure when we can expect the new "Mario" adventure. You can see the "Super Mario Galaxy Movie" in cinemas from April 3, 2026. Here you can take another look at the first trailer.

Super Mario Galaxy: The iconic video games

The "Super Mario Bros. Movie" from 2023 was the starting signal for Nintendo's new film offensive. The animated film by Illumination was a huge box office success and is one of the most successful video game adaptations of all time. So a sequel came as no surprise to anyone.

The focus for the "Super Mario Galaxy Movie" should clearly be on the popular "Super Mario Galaxy" games, which were originally released for the Nintendo Wii. In "Super Mario Galaxy" (2007) and its sequel "Super Mario Galaxy 2" (2010), Mario travels through distant galaxies to free Princess Peach from the clutches of Bowser. The player explores spherical planets with their very own gravity – a concept that made the series unique both mechanically and visually. The great popularity of the "Super Mario Galaxy" games is also reflected on Metacritic – where the two titles are considered the best Wii games of all time! In our movie preview, we take a closer look at what we can expect in the film adaptation.

Yoshi, Bowser Jr. and Wario: old acquaintances with great potential

With Yoshi, another cult figure from the "Mario" universe is now entering the big screen. The green dinosaur with the long tongue has been an integral part of the series since "Super Mario World" (1990) and is known for his cheerful nature and his ability to devour enemies and lay eggs. In the games, Yoshi often serves as a loyal companion who helps Mario overcome difficult obstacles – a role he could also take on in the movie.

Bowser Jr, the son of the dreaded King Koopa, on the other hand, is a clever and playful antagonist. He made his debut in "Super Mario Sunshine" (2002) and has since appeared time and again as a tricky adversary. He often tries to emulate his father, but also has his very own personality and a weakness for technical gimmicks.

Wario, on the other hand, stands for chaos and greed – and is the exact opposite of Mario. His first appearance was in 1992 in "Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins", where he was the main antagonist. He was later given his own games, in which his quirky humor and eccentric personality take center stage. If Wario does indeed appear in the new film, it could make for some hilarious but also turbulent scenes. We are therefore looking forward to seeing which characters will appear in the sequel – and hope that we will soon be able to present you the second trailer for "The Super Mario Galaxy Movie". You can of course find it in the KinoCheck app or on our YouTube channel as soon as it is released!
