That's it for "Spider-Noir": The Prime Video series starring Nicolas Cage has been canceled. There won't be a second season. The series centers on an alternative film-noir version of the superhero Spider-Man. "Spider-Noir" was well-received by critics and viewers alike, so its sudden cancellation is likely to disappoint many. However, there is a silver lining for fans: The partnership between Amazon and Sony Pictures TV is set to produce another series from the "Spider-Man" franchise, as reported by Variety. The project is already in development and is expected to be announced soon.
As for the cancellation of "Spider-Noir," lead actor Nicolas Cage issued a statement to Deadline. He told the website:
"For me, one season is perfect, having said what I wanted to say with this dangerous, innovative, pop-art Spider-Man."
However, many fans likely hoped for more stories from the world of "Spider-Noir" – and were probably caught off guard by the cancellation. Especially since the series is also quite prominent at this year's Emmy Awards. "Spider-Noir" is about an alternate version of the popular Marvel hero Spider-Man. The story is still set in New York, but the plot has been moved from the present day to the 1930s. The protagonist isn't Peter Parker, but Ben Reilly. The now-aging private detective once fought crime as the masked superhero The Spider. Reilly quit after a personal tragedy, but then finds himself forced to give up his early superhero retirement.
"Spider-Noir" is based on the comic book series "Spider-Man Noir," created by writers David Hine and Fabrice Sapolsky, along with artists Carmine Di Giandomenico and Marko Djurdjević. It kicked off in 2009 with a four-part miniseries. The story also centers on a film-noir version of Spider-Man. However, the hero in the comics is not named Ben Reilly, but Peter Parker – just like the current original Spider-Man.

The lead role of Ben Reilly is played by Hollywood star Nicolas Cage in the Prime Video adaptation. The cast also includes Li Jun Li, Lamorne Morris, Jack Huston, and Brendan Gleeson. The showrunners are Oren Uziel, who co-wrote the screenplay for the action comedy "The Lost City", and Steve Lightfoot, who developed the Netflix adaptation of "The Punisher". One unique feature of "Spider-Noir" is that the series is available in two versions. Viewers can choose to watch the episodes in color or in black-and-white. Just a few months ago, co-showrunner Uziel spoke about the series' potential future. He hinted that future seasons of "Spider-Noir" could be set during World War II. However, with the cancellation now announced, one thing is clear: that won't be happening.
Fans of Nicolas Cage can at least look forward to a new movie starring the Hollywood star. The actor is set to appear in the post-apocalyptic thriller "Parish." The film from writer and director Adam Sigal takes place 30 years after a nuclear catastrophe. Cage is set to portray the survivor Parish. One day, a desperate woman with an infant shows up at his hideout – with life-threatening consequences. Parish finds himself in the crosshairs of a brutal gang of cannibals, and a fight for survival ensues. Filming is set to begin as early as October.
