The Batman 2: Filming Resumes After a Brief Hiatus
Steven Soderbergh will wrap up filming
After a brief forced hiatus, production on "The Batman 2" appears to be moving forward again. In an interview with GamesRadar magazine, Robert Pattinson confirmed that filming for the DC sequel has resumed. The actor playing Batman is reportedly set to return to the set in just a few days.
The reason for the temporary hiatus was a family issue involving director Matt Reeves. It was recently announced that Steven Soderbergh would step in for Reeves to bring the production to a close. The filmmaker reportedly reached out personally after learning of Reeves' situation and offered his support. For Pattinson, this is particularly remarkable because Soderbergh has no intention of putting his own stamp on the film. Instead, his focus is on helping his colleague and bringing his already-developed vision to completion.
He also emphasized how much work Reeves had already put into the screenplay and the entire production. Filming was already well underway. Pattinson described it as exceptionally generous that Soderbergh, a highly respected director, is now stepping in and intends to see the project through to the editing phase alongside Reeves. DC had also previously made it clear that Matt Reeves will continue to play a crucial role in "The Batman Part 2".
The Cast of The Batman 2
In addition to the familiar returning cast members – including Robert Pattinson, Jeffrey Wright as Jim Gordon, and Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth – we can expect some high-profile new additions. One name in particular is causing a stir: Sebastian Stan. Initially, a newspaper report claimed he had confirmed his role as District Attorney Harvey Dent. Shortly thereafter, however, that passage was removed. Speculation about his role, however, persists. As is well known, Harvey Dent eventually becomes the iconic villain Two-Face. Fittingly, Hollywood star Scarlett Johansson is also on board. And in addition to speculation about the character Poison Ivy, one role in particular is the subject of intense discussion: Harvey's wife, Gilda Dent. In the comic "The Long Halloween", she becomes the serial killer Holiday.
The comic is considered a major source of inspiration for the new film series and also serves as an origin story for Two-Face. The source material tells the story of how Gotham transforms from a city in the grip of organized crime into a breeding ground for masked supervillains. "The Batman" showed the beginnings of this story. It seems logical to us that Part 2 will now incorporate the later elements of the comic: specifically, the story of Harvey and Gilda Dent. However, nothing has been officially confirmed yet.
The cast is rounded out by character actor Charles Dance, Brian Tyree Henry, and German actor Sebastian Koch. An appearance by Barry Keoghan as the Joker is also considered very likely in industry circles. Reeves is clearly putting together an ensemble cast that's in a league of its own when it comes to acting. By the way: The Penguin will also be making a return. However, Colin Farrell has already revealed that he'll only appear in two scenes in the finished film.
The Delayed Theatrical Release of "The Batman 2"
It's unclear what the hiatus means for the theatrical release. The release of "The Batman 2" has already been postponed several times by years and is currently scheduled for February 18, 2028. Theoretically, there's still enough time until then to weather a certain filming hiatus. But the release date is certainly not set in stone. Furthermore, "The Batman 2" is being produced under the "DC Elseworlds" label. The film is therefore completely independent of developments in the rest of the DCU and stands on its own. So there's no pressure to release it at a specific time.
