Zodiac: Writing Duo Found for the New MCU Series
Filming is scheduled to begin in 2027
The MCU is getting another series addition: "Zodiac", a new spy thriller for Disney+, is currently in development. Deadline has now announced the writing duo behind the project. The screenplay is being written by Amit Cohen and Ron Leshem.
Among other projects, Leshem developed the Israeli original series "Euphoria", which later served as the basis for the successful HBO adaptation starring Zendaya. Together with Cohen, he also worked on Israeli series such as "Red Skies". The two have already made a name for themselves in the U.S. market as well: Together, they developed the drama series "No Man's Land" for Hulu.
Here's what Zodiac is about
Specific details about the plot of this mysterious project are largely under wraps. According to initial reports, however, "Zodiac" is said to revolve around two spies whose mission is to track down and hunt people with extraordinary abilities. It is not yet known which characters will take center stage or whether any familiar MCU characters will make an appearance. However, the series' first logo hints that the secret organization S.H.I.E.L.D. might also play a role.
In Marvel Comics, there are various characters and groups known by the name Zodiac. Whether the Disney+ series is based on them or simply borrows the name remains to be seen. Fans will have to be patient for a while longer until the series is released. As things stand, production is scheduled to begin sometime in 2027. The premiere on Disney+ is planned for 2028.
Marvel's Series Landscape Is Changing
"Zodiac" is being developed at a time when Marvel is significantly rethinking its lineup of live-action series. Numerous shows from recent years have already concluded or are nearing their end. Instead of a large number of projects running simultaneously, the studio appears to be increasingly focusing on select series.
Among them is "Daredevil: Born Again". However, the series isn't expected to run much longer: It will end after the third season, which is set to premiere in 2027. At this year's New York Comic Con, lead actor Charlie Cox commented on the topic: He expects the campaign to save "Daredevil" to pick up steam again soon. He was referring to the fan movement that had campaigned for a continuation after the original Netflix series ended. In addition, attendees were shown a brief clip from the third season, featuring Matt Murdock in an action scene. However, no further details about the plot were revealed.
"Wonder Man", starring Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, was not renewed for a second season. Nevertheless, the production achieved a notable success: Abdul-Mateen II received an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series for his portrayal of the title character. For Marvel, it was the first Emmy nomination of its kind since the huge success of "WandaVision". Currently, the spotlight is also on "VisionQuest". Following "WandaVision" and "Agatha All Along", the series concludes the unofficial "WandaVision" trilogy and premiered on October 13. The eight episodes are being released weekly.
