Kiki's Delivery Service: Studio Ghibli Anime to Become a TV Series
Hayao Miyazaki's iconic anime film will return as a live-action production
Surprising news for anime fans: According to multiple media reports, the cult classic "Kiki's Delivery Service" is being adapted into a series! The remake is based on Eiko Kadono's book of the same name. However, most movie fans are likely familiar with the story from Hayao Miyazaki's cult classic film from 1989.
The series adaptation will be a live-action production. Ten half-hour episodes are planned and are currently in development. The project is being led by screenwriter Irena Brignull, whose previous credits include the animated features "The Little Prince" (2015) and "The Boxtrolls." "Kiki's Delivery Service" is a British-Japanese co-production involving BBC Studios Kids & Family, the production studio Wheel in Motion, and Kadokawa Corporation. It remains unclear for now when "Kiki's Little Delivery Service" will premiere.
The Book by Eiko Kadono
The story of "Kiki's Delivery Service" is based on the 1985 children's novel by Japanese author Eiko Kadono. The book tells the story of Kiki, a young witch who, in accordance with an ancient tradition, must leave her hometown to live alone in a foreign city for a year and hone her skills. Kadono's work became a huge success in Japan and was later expanded with several sequels.
The Anime Adaptation by Hayao Miyazaki
However, the story gained worldwide fame primarily through the anime adaptation by the renowned Studio Ghibli. The film "Kiki's Delivery Service", directed by Hayao Miyazaki, remains one of the legendary animation studio's most popular works to this day. While Miyazaki adopted the basic premise of the novel, he also made changes to the characters, plot, and tone. This resulted in a unique interpretation that differs from the book.
The anime follows 13-year-old Kiki, who, together with her talking black cat Jiji, leaves her hometown to complete her training as a witch. In a picturesque coastal town, she tries to build a new life for herself. Since she's particularly good at flying, she starts a delivery service on her witch's broom and earns a living that way. During her adventures, she makes new friends, has to cope with setbacks, and grows increasingly through her challenges. The focus is less on a classic conflict and more on Kiki's personal journey into adulthood. You can currently stream the film on HBO Max.
What makes Kiki's Delivery Service so special?
It's precisely this approach that makes "Kiki's Delivery Service" so special to this day. Instead of relying on big battles or dramatic twists, the film tells a quiet, heartwarming story about self-discovery, insecurity, and growing up. Many viewers can relate to Kiki's doubts, her desire for independence, and her experiences in a new environment. Add to that the richly detailed backgrounds, the lovingly crafted world, and Studio Ghibli's unmistakable animation style. The European-inspired coastal town where the story takes place is still considered one of the most beautiful settings in anime history.
Studio Ghibli
The film is one of the works that have contributed significantly to Studio Ghibli's international success. Founded in 1985, the studio has evolved over the decades into one of the most respected animation studios in the world. Among the best-known Ghibli films are "Princess Mononoke," "Howl's Moving Castle," and the Academy Award winning classic "Spirited Away." The studio's productions have captivated generations of viewers with their imaginative worlds, multi-layered characters, and emotional stories.
Studio Ghibli has also become a true pop culture phenomenon. Scenes and motifs from the films enjoy great popularity on social media, while the works regularly attract new fans. In particular, the distinctive visual style of Ghibli films is appreciated worldwide and is considered by many viewers to be the epitome of nostalgic, hand-drawn animation. One thing is already certain: Given the immense popularity of the anime and Studio Ghibli in general, the live-action adaptation of "Kiki's Delivery Service" faces a major challenge. It will be interesting to see how the series is received by fans.
