Mahershala Ali in Task Season 2: Moonlight Star Cast in HBO Show Alongside Mark Ruffalo
First details about the plot of the second season have already been revealed
The crime thriller "Task" is heading into its next round! A second season has already been officially confirmed for the HBO production, which was originally planned as a miniseries. Now the next big step has been taken and a new lead actor has been found. The industry portal Variety reports that "Moonlight" star Mahershala Ali will appear alongside Mark Ruffalo.
Ruffalo already led the cast in Season 1 as Tom Brandis and is currently the only confirmed returning cast member. With Mahershala Ali joining the series, Ruffalo is getting high-profile support. Ali has already won two Academy Awards (for "Moonlight" and "Green Book"), making him one of the most renowned actors of his generation.
The plot of Task season 2
Variety also reports on the first plot details. In the second season of "Task", Ruffalo's Tom Brandis puts together a new task force. While investigating a new case, his unit reportedly finds itself in conflict with the team of DEA agent Eddie Barnes, played by Mahershala Ali.
The series continues to be led by creator Brad Ingelsby, who already served as showrunner for the first season. Apart from Ruffalo and Ali, no other actors have yet been confirmed. It therefore remains to be seen whether other characters from season 1 will return. A release date for Season 2 has not yet been announced.
What Task is about
The first season of "Task" mainly revolves around Tom Brandis and Robbie Prendergrast, played by Tom Pelphrey. The two are on opposite sides of the law – Tom is an FBI agent and Robbie attracts attention with a series of robberies. In order to investigate the crimes, Tom is tasked with assembling a special task force.
The series is largely told from these two perspectives. Another key role is played by Robbie's niece Maeve, portrayed by Emilia Jones. In addition to its central crime storyline, the show also explores the family lives of Tom Brandis and Robbie Prendergrast. As a result, "Task" functions both as a crime thriller and a character study. The first season is currently available to stream on HBO Max.
Mahershala Ali
With Mahershala Ali, "Task" brings on board an actor who has proven his versatility in both film and television over the past several years. He became widely known through "Moonlight", for which he won his first Oscar for Best Supporting Actor. He later received another Academy Award for his role in "Green Book", where he starred alongside Viggo Mortensen. Ali has also appeared in "The Hunger Games" films and "Alita: Battle Angel". Most recently, he was part of the cast of the blockbuster "Jurassic World: Rebirth".
He has also made a name for himself on television: in the acclaimed Netflix series "House of Cards", he played the lobbyist Remy Danton, and he also appeared in the Marvel series "Luke Cage". In the third season of "True Detective", he took on the lead role of a disillusioned investigator – meaning Ali is no stranger to high-profile HBO crime dramas.
Brad Ingelsby: Task and Mare of Easttown
Brad Ingelsby has already established himself in the crime genre with another HBO project. His mini-series "Mare of Easttown" became a major hit in 2021 and was widely praised by both critics and audiences. The show centers on a small-town detective, played by Kate Winslet, who investigates a murder case while her personal life begins to fall apart.
"Mare of Easttown" was praised in particular for its dense atmosphere, complex characters and realistic look at a torn community – qualities that also characterize "Task". With Ingelsby as the creative mind and a cast including Mark Ruffalo and Mahershala Ali, there is a good chance that the second season will once again be able to build on the strengths of modern prestige crime series.
