Tiana: Disney cancels "The Princess and the Frog" series before release

Instead, a special is said to be in the works

The long-awaited "Tiana" series, which was announced back in December 2020 as a sequel to the popular animated film "The Princess and the Frog", is about to be canceled. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the project was canceled before its release. An unannounced animated film for Disney+ has also been canceled.

Several personnel changes and creative changes of direction behind the scenes are said to have meant that the "Tiana" project could no longer justify its high production costs. However, the decision was not only made for creative or financial reasons. Rather, it is part of a larger restructuring at Disney, which is placing a stronger focus on cinema productions again. With immediate effect, Walt Disney Animation Studios will no longer produce independent series or films exclusively for Disney+.

A prime example of this is "Moana 2". The sequel was originally planned as a series before being remade as a feature film. The result: worldwide box office takings of over one billion dollars.

However, fans of "Kiss the Frog" do not have to do without new content completely. Disney is planning a special, presumably in the form of a short film. The script for this comes from "Midnight Mass" author Joyce Sherrí, who will also co-direct the film with Stephen J. Anderson. There is no start date yet.
