Pirates of the Caribbean 6 with Johnny Depp? Now the star has spoken out about it
Producer Jerry Bruckheimer had previously talked about a possible comeback
"Pirates of the Caribbean 6" has been eagerly anticipated by fans of the pirate film series for years. One question that keeps coming up is: If there's another installment, will Johnny Depp be back on board as Jack Sparrow? Now the Hollywood star has spoken out on the matter himself. It appears he's open to a return. Apparently, he'd like to see a better conclusion to the film series. This might have something to do with the fact that the last film, released in 2017, wasn't particularly well-received. The fifth installment ,"Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales," fared relatively poorly with critics, as can be seen on Metacritic, where the film received a lower overall critics' score than its predecessors.
Speaking to Entertainment Tonight, he said he could imagine a comeback "If things are exactly where they need to be with regard to how they are going to top off the Pirates franchise." In that case, Depp would like to be involved "to send them off on a better note".
Apparently, producer Jerry Bruckheimer's involvement also plays an important role for him in the event of a possible return. Depp emphasized:
"I will go to work with [Jerry] Bruckheimer tomorrow for anything. Doesn't matter. If it's Jerry, I trust him. We have a deep friendship."
Here's what Bruckheimer says
Some time ago, Bruckheimer also commented on a possible "Pirates of the Caribbean" return by Depp – and confirmed that something is already in the works. During the Disney D23 event, he revealed to Deadline:
"We're talking with Johnny [Depp], we're working on a screenplay, and hopefully we can get this done."
Whether an agreement can ultimately be reached with the actor, however, remains an open question. It's also unclear what role Jack Sparrow will play in "Pirates of the Caribbean 6." There has been speculation for some time that the film will center on a character portrayed by Margot Robbie. Sparrow could also be intended as a supporting character. Robbie's casting in "Pirates of the Caribbean 6" has been under discussion for some time. Jerry Bruckheimer confirmed months ago that talks with Robbie were underway.
Johnny Depp in Ebenezer
Things have been a bit quieter for Johnny Depp in recent years when it comes to new, major roles. However, the Hollywood star has two new films in the pipeline: the fantasy film "Ebenezer" and the action thriller "Day Drinker." "Ebenezer" hits theaters on November 13, 2026. In the meantime, the trailer offers a sneak peek at this reimagining of Charles Dickens' "A Christmas Carol," as you can see here:

Successful franchise
It remains to be seen whether Depp's new films will be as big a box office success as "Pirates of the Caribbean." The first installment of the series was already a hit in 2003, grossing $654 million worldwide. Three years later, the sequel grossed over $1 billion. Another year later, "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End" brought in $960 million. In 2011, "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides" went one better and, like the second installment, grossed over $1 billion.
The fifth and, so far, final installment from 2017 wasn't quite as successful, but it still brought in $794 million at the box office. Given these box office results, it's likely only a matter of time before another "Pirates of the Caribbean" movie is released – with or without Depp.
