The Rookie Season 9 Officially Confirmed! Nathan Fillion Hit Show to Continue
A spin-off titled The Rookie: North is currently in development
Fans of "The Rookie" can rest assured: the popular crime series is continuing! The eighth season of the hit series is currently airing, but that doesn't mean it's the end for Nathan Fillion and the rest of the cast. Instead, a ninth season has now been officially ordered. And if series creator Alexi Hawley has his way, it won't end there either. Speaking to Deadline Hawley shared the following about the show's future:
"So far, the mindset across the board is, as Melissa O'Neil said, 'Let's Grey's Anatomy this thing.' I think everybody is having a good time, it's a cast that truly loves each other and enjoys coming to work, they get to do fun stuff every day. And at this point, heading into Season 9, I don't feel like we're anywhere near out of ideas."
He is, of course, referring to the longevity of "Grey's Anatomy". The show is currently in its 22nd season – and there is still no end in sight. The 23rd season of the hospital drama has also already been confirmed.
The Series' Success
Over the years, "The Rookie" has also become a true long-running hit – and a TikTok phenomenon. The series is particularly popular with younger audiences. The crime series still airs on ABC, but it also reaches a large audience via streaming. The excitement remains undiminished – in fact, interest in the series continues to grow. So it's no wonder that the ninth season is now a done deal.
Season 8 of The Rookie is currently still airing. The season finale will be released on May 4, 2026. Considering the release schedule of the last season, Season 9 can be expected in January 2027. It is still unclear how many episodes the new season will have.
The Rookie: North
But fans of "The Rookie" might soon have more to look forward to. According to Deadline, a spin-off titled "The Rookie: North" is in the works. A pilot episode is currently in development. The story centers on another older rookie, played by Jay Ellis. While the series hasn't been greenlit yet, Alexi Hawley remains optimistic. Either way, this won't be the first spin-off. "The Rookie: Feds" premiered in 2022, though only a single season was produced.
What The Rookie Is About
Since its debut, "The Rookie" has established itself as a staple of modern crime television. At its center is the unusual story of John Nolan, played by Nathan Fillion, who, following a life-changing experience, decides to turn his life around and join the Los Angeles Police Department as the oldest rookie. This late career shift forms the narrative foundation of the series and offers a fresh perspective on everyday police life, setting it apart from classic examples of the genre.
"The Rookie" combines episodic criminal cases with ongoing character development. As Nolan and his colleagues navigate the challenges of police work, the series also focuses on personal conflicts, moral dilemmas, and interpersonal relationships. The series successfully blends action-packed missions with emotional moments while addressing themes such as responsibility, second chances, and social tensions.
The Cast of The Rookie
The police series is largely carried by its ensemble cast: At the center is Nathan Fillion as John Nolan, who, as the oldest rookie at the LAPD, dares to start his career anew. At his side, Alyssa Diaz shines as Angela Lopez, while Richard T. Jones portrays Sergeant Wade Grey. Melissa O'Neil plays Lucy Chen, and the team is rounded out by Eric Winter as Tim Bradford and Mekia Cox in the role of Nyla Harper. Together, they shape the dynamic and success of the series.
