Update: Here is the first Superman trailer!
Plot details
The film will focus on Clark Kent's younger years, but is explicitly not intended to be an origin story. According to James Gunn, it's more about his beginnings as a journalist at the Daily Planet and his perspective on other superheroes. At the same time, he is said to have already made a name for himself as a superhero - so the world already knows about the Man of Steel. It is also said to be about Clark's place in the world, with his Kryptonian origins on the one hand and his adoptive family in Smallville on the other.
James Gunn is said to have drawn inspiration from the "All-Star Superman" comics, a series from the mid-2000s. Leaked photos from the set also suggest a conflict with the authorities – the main character is led away in handcuffs, similar to Henry Cavill's character in "Man of Steel". In contrast to the last films, however, "Superman" is set to be less gloomy this time - that sounds like a fun adventure in the style of competitor Marvel. According to James Gunn, he is also orienting himself more towards the lighter tone of the old Superman films with Christopher Reeve. However, the whole thing is explicitly not intended to be a comedy.
Characters and cast
David Corenswet will slip into the iconic costume. But a number of other heroes will also make their debut in "Superman": for example Mr. Terrific, Supergirl – played by "House of the Dragon" star Milly Alcock – Hawkgirl and Metamorpho. And, of course, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane and Nicholas Hoult in the role of antagonist Lex Luther are not to be missed. Even Superman's faithful companion Krypto will be seen in the film.
Krypto first appeared in 1955 in the 210th issue of "Adventure Comics". Just like Superman, the dog also comes from the planet Krypton. In the comics, the four-legged friend was sent into space by Superman's father in a test rocket to see whether living beings could be evacuated from Krypton to another planet. Due to an unexpected change of course, however, Krypto eventually landed on Earth. There he became Superman's faithful companion and pet.
With so many different superheroes, we wonder whether James Gunn might have taken on too much for the reboot of "Superman". After all, critics have already accused the DCEU of emulating the Avengers too quickly without giving the individual characters enough time to develop. However, if anyone can pull it off, it's James Gunn. With "Guardians of the Galaxy" and "The Suicide Squad", he has already proven that he can bring many new characters together in one movie and still make the whole thing work. Also, we mustn't forget: Just because all the different characters are confirmed for the movie doesn't mean they're going to play really big roles.
Start date
Whether James Gunn ultimately succeeds in the great feat of leading DC back to success with "Superman" and whether David Corenswet can convince as the new Man of Steel, we will see from July 11, 2025 in the cinema.
